KNOXVILLE, IOWA (MAR. 29, 2002) - Veteran sprint and championship car racer Roger Rager of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, has entered this year's Goodyear Masters Classic at the Knoxville Raceway as he takes aim at Rick Ferkel's event record. Ferkel, "the Ohio Traveler" from Tiffin, is the only driver to have won the seniors-tour-type event three times (1993-94- 95). Rager, a two-time winner in 1999 and 2001, is looking to tie Ferkel's mark by winning this year's $3,000-to-win winged 360-cubic-inch sprint car race. Both Ferkel and Rager won the event, which is only open to drivers age fifty and over, in their initial attempts at the 22- lap Classic.

Rager will again wheel John "Butch" Donahue's www.bikershop.com- sponsored, Weseman-powered Schnee sprint car. Joining Rager among the fifteen early entrants are event veterans Shelby Steenson of Kansas, Dave Heskin of Minnesota, Lue Holland of Iowa and 1998 winner Jerry Crabb of Iowa. Those four racers have competed in all nine previous Goodyear Masters Classics and will be honored at the track on the evening of Friday, May 31, for that accomplishment. Other recent entrants are Randy Droescher of Iowa, Earnest Jennings of Oklahoma, Tommy Scott of Illinois, and Oscar Smith of Michigan.

Contenders for "rookie of the race" honors are Jim Payne of Ohio, Phil Watkins of Texas, Paul Veen of Iowa, and Mike Fokken of South Dakota. Last year's 'rookie' Dan Oswalt of Kansas will also be presented with his award during the Friday night program of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction weekend.
