KNOXVILLE, IOWA (FEBRUARY 22, 2002) - The tenth annual "Goodyear Masters Classic" 360-cubic-inch sprint car race, set for Friday, May 31, has had it's first official entries arrive in the offices of the Knoxville Raceway. Those 'early birds' include 1998 winner Jerry Crabb of Des Moines, rookie-of-the-race candidate Jim Payne of Bryan, Ohio, and two of last year's 'top five', Edd French of Keller, Tex., and Carl "Midge" Miller of Willingboro, N.J. In 2001, French and Miller finished second and fifth, respectively, behind winner Roger Rager.

The $3,000-to-win sprint car race is open to drivers age fifty and over, and it is held in conjunction with the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction weekend, May 30-June 2, in Knoxville. Among the other events that weekend are open track practice for all divisions on Thursday night, midget car hot laps on Friday night with the Goodyear Masters Classic, the 13th annual induction banquet on Saturday afternoon, the winged 410 c.i. sprint cars and the Pepsi/Mt. Dew Knoxville Midget Championship on Saturday night, and the Sunday morning farewell breakfast at the museum. The $4,000-to-win midget car race is being co-sanctioned by the Wisconsin-based Badger Midget Auto Racing Association (BMARA), the Illinois/Missouri-based Midwest Auto Racing Association (MARA), and the Ohio/Indiana-based North American Auto Racing Series (NAMARS). The $3,000-to-win 410 race is being sponsored by Kin Folks restaurant and the Magic Muffler shop.
