United Racing Club bringing 'Top Guns' to Brodix Tournament of Champions

KNOXVILLE, IOWA (JUNE 20, 2002) - The United Racing Club (URC), with its Advance Auto Parts Sprint Series sponsored by Bar's Leaks, is bringing its 'top guns' to the Sunday, August 4, Brodix Tournament of Champions (ToC) at the Knoxville Raceway. Among the entries received this week in the offices of the historic dirt track were those filed by inaugural ToC winner Greg Coverdale of Milford, Delaware, current URC point leader Billy Brian, Jr., of Lititz, Pennsylvania, ESS/URC Challenge Series winner Kevin Welsh of Far Hills, New Jersey, and 'Pennsylvania Posse' member Dave Ely of West Lawn, Penna. In addition, entries have been posted by early-season hot-shoes Curt Michael of Ocean View, Del., and Trevor Lewis of Upper Black Eddy, Penna., both of whom are currently recovering from recent racing-related injuries.

Coverdale's rim-riding style that carried him to the first-ever ToC win in September of 1997 is still being talked about at haunts such as A.J.'s Dingus Lounge and the National Sprint Car Museum. Greg, the only Delaware driver to have ever won a main at Knoxville, will pilot the Sam Locuson-owned Asphalt Industries WinMore/Eagle sprinter. Brian, driver of the Big Johnson-sponsored machine on the URC trail, will chauffeur his HammerHead/Schnee winged 360-cubic-inch sprint car in the $4,000-to-win event. Welsh, winner of the ESS/URC Challenge Series event earlier this year at the Grandview Speedway, will bring his Team Welsh Jeep- Chrysler/Castrol Oil-sponsored Brown/Maxim sprinter to the 30-car, 25-lap invitational. Ely, who like Coverdale is a former wheelman for National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Bob Weikert, has entered in the Bill Gallagher- owned GEI/Valley Forge/DMI Ott-or-Kriner/Maxim.

Curt Michael and Trevor Lewis have filed their intentions to represent URC in the team event on the Sunday before the Mopar Parts Knoxville Nationals, although both have missed some recent URC races due to injuries. Drivers need to compete in 60% of their sanction's events prior to the July 8th entry deadline in order to be eligible to compete in the fourth-ever ToC invitational event, which features fully-inverted heat races. Michael has entered in the potent Kathy & Pat Palladino Motorsports Ott/J&J sprinter, which is sponsored by BK Leasing, CnB Mushroom, Phillips Garage, Hank's Performance, Jim's Lettering, and E.J. Wagner & Son Trucking. The personable and lanky Lewis will bring his Rick Lewis-powered Gambler machine, which is helped by Robison Racing Products and T.M. Lyon, the Tire King.

The Brodix Tournament of Champions will bring together ten cars each from the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS), Knoxville Raceway, Empire Super Sprints (ESS) and the United Racing Club (URC), and three cars each from the WISSOTA Promoters Association, Nebraska Sprint Car Association (NSCA) and Winged Outlaw Warriors (WOW), all under one common set of technical rules. Those wishing to see the entry list for the fourth Brodix Tournament of Champions are urged to visit www.knoxvilleraceway.com or www.sprintcarhof.com.
