Rain Nixes ASCS Knoxville 360 Nationals Finale after Alley tops Second Prelim
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 12, 2004) 0x2022 Heavy rains arrived at Knoxville Raceway after the D Feature, forcing the cancellation of the balance of the Advance Auto Parts ASCS Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by Fleet Buying Group and Black Cat Fireworks. The event will not be rescheduled.
Prior to the downpour, Billy Alley raced to victory lane in the second 20-lap preliminary feature, which was postponed to Saturday night when rain interrupted Friday's card.
With the top eight in passing points inverted for the second qualifying feature, Alley led the 24-car feature field to the green flag with John Kearney alongside. The pair battled wheel-to-wheel the opening two rounds, with Kearney holding the edge on the opening round before Alley took command the second time around.
Alley reached lapped traffic on the eighth round, as fourth-starter Roger Rager put the pressure on Kearney for second. Rager took over second at the midway point and set his sight on Alley as the leaders battled through traffic.
Rager had closed to within three car-lengths of Alley when the red flag flew after 16 rounds for Stacey Alexander's turn two flip. Alexander walked away from his battered machine uninjured.
Alley took off on the restart and raced to the checkered flag unchallenged aboard the Wesmar-powered Speedway Motors/Premier Builders/Buss Excavating No. 22 Eagle. The victory marked Alley's second career triumph in O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers action.
Kearney reclaimed the runner-up slot after the lap 16 restart and held the position to the line, with 10th-starter Wayne Johnson making a late charge to snare the show position. Aaron Berryhill surged from 12th to claim fourth, with Rager rounding out the top five.
Joe Beaver, Travis Cram, Jake Peters, Eric Jobe and Randy Martin completed the top ten.
With the lineups for Saturday's Knoxville 360 Nationals championship features set, Ryan Jamison topped the E Feature with John Schulz racing to the stripe first in the D Feature. Torrential rains hit the half-mile clay oval soon after, forcing the cancellation of the balance of the program.
Jimmy Taylor and Nate Mosher both escaped injury in a wild opening-lap turn two fracas in the D Feature.
