After Two: Darland Leads KISS Points
May 30, 2005 - With two King of Indiana Sprint Series races in the books, a pair of rainouts and three events to go, the point battle is still as close as it can be. Dave Darland holds a slim one-point lead over Dickie Gaines. A. J. Anderson sits just seventeen points out of first, with Matt Westfall four points behind him and fifth place Justin Marvel only 28 points behind the leader.
After suffering back-to-back rainouts at Gas City and Bloomington, Darland jumped into the point lead with his victory at Lincoln Park Speedway, in the first series race completed. He followed that with a seventh place in Saturday's race at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Gaines was runner-up to Brandon Petty at Lawrenceburg after finishing sixth at Lincoln Park. Anderson matches a third in the first race with a ninth place on Saturday. Marvel and Westfall finished eighth and tenth at Lincoln Park, then Westfall was third and Marvel sixth at Lawrenceburg. Petty's victory at Lawrenceburg moved him to 11th in points, as he skipped the race at Lincoln Park.
Historically, it is a curious mix. Of the top five, Darland, Westfall and Marvel have all won one KISS feature. Even though Anderson hasn't won a KISS race, he was second in last year's points. And even though Gaines, who sits second in points, has yet to win a KISS race, his is the 2001 series point champion.
