Short Track Nationals Highlight of Young Swindell's Career
Memphis, TN (November 3, 2004) - Kevin Swindell met his goals of qualifying and finishing well in the 17th Annual Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock this past weekend.
With a field of nearly 100 cars entered, Kevin was able to advance to 4th from his drawn last row starting spot in his qualifying race on Saturday night. That finish earned him enough points for a chance at the A-Main.
Lining up 3rd in the B-Main, he raced his way into the night's big race with a 2nd place finish.
"I knew I needed to get to second at least, so I worked the outside and was able to make the passes I needed," Swindell stated. "With only 12 laps, I knew I had to get there quick."
Starting last in the 20 car A-Main, Kevin picked his way through cars and by the halfway point was running in the top ten. While running 7th, he was turned around by the 8th place car with only 4 laps to go. Swindell rebounded after that to score an impressive 12th place finish.
Another highlight to the weekend for him was the 8th place finish in the 25-lap Feature on Friday night. This coming after making the 20 car field from the record car count on hand.
"Friday night the track put rubber down and my car was really good. I was able to get to the bottom and run some fast laps. I passed nine cars to finish 8th. Saturday the track was different, better prepared and we could move around more. I liked the close racing and battling in traffic. The track was run to race and I learned so much."
"I need to say thanks to everyone that helped me including my dad, Maxim Chassis, Les and Lynda Stewart of York Excavating, Joe Gaerte for a great motor and Hoosier Tires."
Kevin's next race will be at Memphis Motorsports Park this coming Saturday night competing in the 360 Comp Cams Memphis Nationals. He will also be driving in the USMA Mini-Sprint show that is part of the program.
