Leonard's Victory Highlights Florida Opener For J&J

McKenzie, TN -- The off-season seems to get shorter and shorter and last weekend, sprint cars returned to the dirt in the United States with the annual kick-off in Florida. Greg Leonard highlighted the weekend for J&J Auto Racing by scoring a popular win aboard Tom Winegardner's #11 J&J in the second preliminary feature of the 4-day 7th Annual 360 Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park last Thursday. Winegardner's

Leonard led all 25 laps around the Tampa oval driving the #11 J&J and was thrilled in victory lane. "A local won last night and I won tonight. Maybe we locals can keep this streak going the rest of the week," said Leonard, who concluded last season by winning the USCS Fall Brawl at East Bay in November.

After timing 12th, Leonard was able to start on the pole after two faster cars were unable to make it past the C-Main and four other cars who timed faster, had to run the B-Main. Leonard showed the way the entire distance and withstood a late caution with only two laps remaining to pick up the win.

Stenhouse Jr Shows Promise

Young racer Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. made his 2005 and Florida debut in the #40 Fast Effects/Dyno Tech J&J. The Olive Branch, MS native finished 12th in the opener, raced from 9th to third in the B Main on Saturday afternoon in Friday's rain delayed event, but had tough luck in the feature. He was caught up in an early incident and came home 20th.

While track officials reworked the track for the final later in the evening, the #40 crew rebuilt the frontend for the 7th Annual 360 Winternationals finale. Stenhouse finished third in his heat race and raced from 13th starting position in the feature to a ninth place finish.

Hodnett/Hamilton Set for Debut

The Hamilton Motorsports team is poised for a strong season with the addition of driver Greg Hodnett. Hodnett will make his debut in the #77 J&J at East Bay this week in the annual Winternationals in Florida.

As Hamilton Motorsports enters its 38th season of competition and Hodnett begins his 20th season of driving sprint cars, the team will compete on Thursday night's at Susquehanna Speedway Park, Friday night's at Williams Grove Speedway with Lincoln Speedway being their Saturday night home and at various other events throughout the season including Pennsylvania Speedweek, World of Outlaws, All Star Circuit of Champions and the Knoxville Nationals.
