Dave Darland of Kokomo, Ind. is the 1998 Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" champion, beating 1997 series runner-up Tony Elliott by a single point in a sensational wrap-up to the 7-race series Sunday night at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind. Darland won the series finale after a late-race duel with Elliott to determine who would win the crown.
Darland and Elliott each scored two victories in the series, which suffered a rainout Wednesday night at the Terre Haute Action Track. The "Jim Hurtubise Classic" has been reset for August 14. Darland won the series opener and closer, while Elliott recorded victories at Kokomo and Friday night at Bloomington. Kevin Doty won Thursday night's North Vernon feature and Derek Davidson scored his initial Stoops Freightliner/USAC Sprint Car win Saturday at Paragon.
The Stoops Freightliner Sprint cars are idle this week but resume August 5 at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio with a nationally-televised (ESPN2) event as the opener to the track's "Historical Big One" week.
Darland and Elliott battled fiercely in the closing stages of Sunday's Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" finale at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville. Darland led all but one lap but Elliott slipped past on lap 26. Dave regained the lead the next lap and held it to the finish in the Hoffman Auto Racing Special. National series point leader Kevin Thomas was third.
Davidson passed Jimmy Sills on the eighth lap of Saturday's "Sheldon Kinser Classic" at Paragon Speedway and led the rest of the way in his Hannig Construction/Bailey's One Stop Special. Sills and Rip Williams trailed him to the checkered flag.
Elliott passed Brad Fox on the 13th lap of the "Larry Rice Classic" at Bloomington Speedway Friday and led the rest of the way in his Stealth/Murray's Body Shop/Jam It In Storage Special to beat Fox and Kevin Doty. Doty won a late-race shootout with Robbie Rice to win Thursday's "Pat O'Connor Classic" at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon. J.J. Yeley, last year's "Indiana Sprint Week" titlist, was third.
Darland added the $500 "Coca-Cola Lap Leader Award" by leading the most laps during the series. Turbines, Inc. $600 fast qualifier awards last week went to Doty, Rickie Gaunt, Rip Williams and Brandon Petty.
Kevin Thomas, who was third in the final Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" standings, emerged with a 79-point lead over Elliott in the Stoops Freightliner National points, with fifth, fourth, ninth and third-place finishes last week.
