Sawyer Tops I-30 Speedway's 600 Nationals Prelim; Gardner Scores First Sprint Win
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 15, 2006) -- Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Scott Sawyer proved to be the cream of the crop by wiring the field to win Friday night's 20-lap feature as 124 drivers from 16 different states descended upon I-30 Speedway for the opening night of the inaugural 600 Nationals.
Sawyer gunned into the lead at the drop of the green flag and held on to record the victory, locking himself into Saturday night's $10,000 to win finale along with the balance of the top six finishers, which included Chris Lloyd (Moore, OK), Ben Murphy (Enola, PA), Nate Lauderbaugh (Kokomo, IN), Eric Wright (Goodlettsville, TN) and Travis Senter, Jr. (Osceola, AR).
In the companion Sprint Car feature, youngster Cody Gardner notched his first career feature win by besting a stout field of entries. Terry Gray, Tim Crawley, Darren Stewart and Jesse Hockett rounded out the top five.
Indiana's Jonathan Hendrick earned the pole position for the 600cc Micro feature by accumulating the most points through heat and qualifying race action. Hendrick charged from tenth to win the evening's seventh heat race, then advanced from tenth to third in the first qualifying race.
But it was outside front row starter Sawyer, who raced from seventh to second in his heat and then ninth to first in his qualifier, taking the early lead. Sawyer's quick pace was interrupted just once when Steve Milton and Nick Bailey tangled in turn four on the fifth lap.
John Paynter prevailed in a multi-car battle for second and closed to within several car lengths of Sawyer at the stripe, only to be disqualified for weighing in below the minimum required weight.
The top six finishers (Sawyer, Lloyd, Murphy, Lauderbaugh, Wright and Senter) are locked into Saturday's Sawyer Chassis Dash for Cash, which will determine the alignment of the first three rows of the championship feature event, while the balance of the field will start from scratch in the quest to fill the 24-car feature starting field.
Dean Alexander finished seventh in Friday's feature, with Matt Covington, Austin Laskey and Jerrod Wilson competing the top ten.
In the Sprint Car feature, Gardner jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and set a torrid pace throughout, holding on to take the win despite some heavy smoke that billowed from his machine.
Mike Ward's turn one spin while running second was the Sprint Car feature's only caution. Ward exited early from the Sprint Car feature then finished 13th in 600cc Micro feature.
After transferring from a Last Chance race in Micro action, Jason Johnson launched off the first turn in spectacular fashion during his Qualifying Race. Johnson escaped uninjured.
