There is less than 48 hours until the 2002 version of Northwest Speedweek kicks off and the west^Òs best sprint car drivers and crews are gearing up and heading for Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, OR for Monday^Òs, opening race. $84,000 is on line for the week^Òs racing so hot, heavy and wheel to wheel action is expected at as they travel to five different tracks in six days for what is probably the hardest week of racing on the west coast.
Following the opener at Medford, the drivers will take their share of the $12,835 purse and head north to take on "The Grove" at Cottage Grove, OR on Tuesday the 16th. A short jaunt up I-5 will see the action on Lebanon, OR's Willamette Speedway on Wednesday the 17th. From there it's a Thursday evening race at State Fair Raceway in Yakima, WA on the 18th.
After running for the $51,340 available the first four nights, there is still another $32,740 up for grabs on Friday and Saturday, the 19th and 20th. As it has been the past 5 years, the final two nights of Northwest Speedweek will culminate in the "Evergreen State Sprint Challenge" at Grays Harbor Raceway Park in Elma, WA.
Drivers, crews and fans from Washington, British Columbia, Alberta and Montana are most likely already on the road to Medford and those from Oregon and California will no doubt be joining them soon. It won^Òt be a surprise to see over fifty cars filling the pits as Monday^Òs opener gets under way and 2002 looks to be the best Northwest Speedweek yet.
Results from each night's action will be released as soon as possible after completion of the event.
