Willamette Speedway brings Wilskey first 2002 NST win.
Three time hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour champion Shawna Wilskey has a new team in 2002 and Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, OR provided the place for them to win their first NST feature event. The Scotty Pierce Oberto / Bardahl team with the Lake Stevens, WA driver at the wheel made good use of three yellow flags and a race stopping red to lead all 30 laps of Friday night's feature event.
Although second place finisher Dale Smith of Cottage Grove, OR would close the gap as the leaders ran in traffic, he was never able to get close enough to make a hard challenge for the lead. Yellows on laps 8, 11 and 25, along with a lap18 red gave Wilskey a clear track and lead that Smith was not able to over come once they caught the back markers.
Following Wilskey and Smith, Scott Aumen, Travis Hawthorne and defending champion Roger Crockett swapped positions for several laps before Duncan, BC driver Aumen took control of third for good. Crockett, running out of Eugene, OR, continued to camp on Aumen's rear nerf while Jason Solwold, Chad Hillier, Jayme Barnes, Jeff Hodgson and Bill Nutter ran nose to tail not far behind.
This close running action came to a halt on lap 18 when in heavy traffic Crockett spun in turn four. As cars moved to miss Crockett, Marvin Smith spun also as Jeff Hodgson caught Crockett's wheel and went for a wild ride on to the front straight. Hodgson, all the way down from St. Albert, AB walked away from the nasty flip but the car was badly damaged, shedding parts as it tumbled down the track.
Back in action, Hawthorn challenge for third with Solwold moving into the battle also. Smith was again gaining on Wilskey when the final yellow with five laps to go closed the field, and the checkered flag waved before Smith could get with in striking distance. Following Wilskey, Smith and Aumen to vfill out the top six were Hawthorne, Solwold and Hillier.
Post race, Wilskey and Pierce both commented that they were happy with the way the new team was comming together and expected to ad more wins to the list.
Hawthorne, starting on the pole in the B-main, was quick to take the lead and hold a 3-5 car length advantage over the field the entire 15 laps with Solwold running second. Cale Carder and Dan Menne diced for position for much of the race, moving up to take third and fourth.
John Tharp picked up five spots and was closing on Menne but fell short of a transfer to the feature event, finishing fifth. Glenn Borden, Jr. picked off 7 drivers to move up from 13th and filled out the top six.
Crockett blazed his way around the track in the first heat, with almost a half lap lead over the second place car of Aumen at the finish line.
The second heat had four of the seven Canadian cars competing, with Dawn-L Morrison of Millet, AB taking the win. Todd Heikes was second over Wilskey and Hodgson.
The third heat went to rookie Robert McNulty as he kept Hillier from finding a way to the front in a good close race.
The night's final heat went to Jayme Barnes with Steven Tiner second.
The dash went to Aumen over Wilskey, D. Smith, Crockett, Hodgson and Heikes.
Fast time of the night was posted by Crockett with a 12.400 second circuit of the three-tenths mile track.
