ASCS Mid-South & Gulf South Square off with Weekend Double
TULSA, Okla. (May 1, 2006) -- The new American Sprint Car Series Mid-South Region is set to take on the ASCS Gulf South Region for a pair of events this weekend in Arkansas and Louisiana.
The two Regional series square off at 67 Texarkana Speedway on Friday night, before moving on to Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, LA, on Saturday night.
Both series feature close championship points battles entering the weekend, with the top two drivers in both series separated by just two points.
After the recent opening pair of events for the ASCS Mid-South Region, Bixby, Oklahoma's Darren Stewart sits atop the Mid-South point charts with a slim two-point lead over Jan Howard. Dale Howard is just four more points back in fourth, with the balance of the current top five including Michael Herrington and Gary Wright.
While just 24 points separate the top-five in ASCS Mid-South Region points, the ASCS Gulf South Region championship chase is even tighter with only 16 markers separating the top five.
Gary Watson of Beaumont, TX, enters the weekend double leading ASCS Gulf South Region points, just two markers ahead of Eunice, LA, ace Jason Johnson, who swept the most recent two-night Gulf South weekend of action. Greg Rilat is just four more points back in third, with Chris Sweeney and Darryl Wills rounding out the current top five.
A stout field of entries is expected for both nights of racing action atop the pair of fast, 0x00bc-mile clay ovals in Arkansas and Louisiana.

The 2006 ASCS Gulf South Region schedule consists of 25 events at ten different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.
The inaugural season for the ASCS Mid-South Region currently consists of ten events at eight different tracks throughout Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Louisiana.
In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
