Wright sweeps ASCS Gulf South Twin 20's at Thunder Valley

UNION HILL, Lou. (September 20, 2003) - Gary Wright pocketed $3,000 by sweeping Saturday night's twin 20-lap American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region features at Thunder Valley Speedway.

With the top six in qualifying inverted for the first feature, Greg Rilat led the field to the green flag with Stephen Chevallier alongside in the first feature. Rilat paced the opening rounds with Todd Johnson chasing until he slipped high on the eighth round, allowing fifth-starter Wright and Scottie McDonald to close in on Rilat.

Wright took command soon after and raced to the checkered flag in the first 20-lapper ahead of McDonald. Johnson recovered for third, with Sam Hafertepe, Jr., overtaking Rilat for fourth on the final round.

The top ten finishers in the first feature were inverted for the second main event, with Wright tagging the rear of the 20-car field.

Brandon Berryman outgunned polesitter Kelly Angelette to take the early lead in the second feature, pacing the early rounds with Morgan slipping past Angelette for second on the fourth round. Morgan dashed past Berryman to take command three laps later, as Wright had already cracked the top five.

Working the crowd into a frenzy, Wright charged past Chevallier for fourth on the seventh circuit, then disposed of Angelette and Berryman two rounds later. Wright quickly closed in on Morgan and made the winning pass on the 14th round.

Wright raced to the checkered flag aboard the Salina-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction Maxim with a four car-length lead over Morgan at the line. Berryman snared the show position in front of current ASCS Gulf South Region point leader Angelette, who battled through the twin features just days after severely shattering his wrist in a dirt bike accident. Chevallier rounded out the top five in the second feature.

Berryman picked up a $500 fast-qualifier bonus by stopping the clocks at 12.096 seconds in qualifying action.
