ASCS Gulf South Set for Two More This Weekend
TULSA, Okla. (March 31, 2008) -- Louisiana's Jason Johnson has broken out of the gates quickly in 2008, with four wins in ten overall American Sprint Car Series starts through the early portion of the season. "The Ragin' Cajun" is set to try for two more this weekend as the ASCS Gulf South Region rolls into Southeast Texas for a pair of events on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday night, the series makes its second stop of the year at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, TX. Then on Saturday night, the ASCS Gulf South Region moves on to 105 Speedway in Cleveland, TX, for the first time in 2008. Both tracks are 0x00bc-mile clay ovals.
A top competitor with the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, Johnson of Eunice, LA, leads ASCS Gulf South points entering this weekend's double on the strength of two wins in three events aboard Marvin Pearson's Wesmar-powered No. 11 Eagle, including a triumph in the series February 29 season opener at Golden Triangle.
However, since Johnson will miss a number of events later in the season due to National Tour commitments, Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, is the series' virtual points leader entering the weekend.
Coming off a fourth-place finish in ASCS Gulf South Region points last year, the 2004 series runner-up opened up the season with a third-place finish at Golden Triangle followed by runs of fifth at Houston Raceway Park (March 1) and eleventh at Champion Park (March 29), good enough to stand above the rest of the Gulf South title contenders.
Not by much though, as Sweeney's advantage is a slim one in the historically tight series championship points battle. Sweeney enters this weekend just ten markers ahead of three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX, and 2006 champion Gary Watson of Beaumont, TX, who are tied for position.
Seventeen-year-old Channin Tankersley of Highlands, TX, is just 26 points off of Sweeney's pace, with other top contenders entering the weekend's action including Jimmy Brooks (College Station, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX), 2005 series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek (Willis, TX), Tommy Bryant (Conroe, TX), defending champion Brandon Berryman (Missouri City, TX) and rookie contender Travis Elliott (Alvin, TX).
Friday's action at Golden Triangle Raceway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's card at 105 Speedway firing off at 7:00 p.m.
Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 near Beaumont, TX. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.
