Lonnie Wheatley, ASCS - TULSA, Okla. (June 30, 2003) - After several weeks off, the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region gets back into the swing of things this weekend with a double dose of racing action in Louisiana. Friday night, the ASCS Gulf South troops invade Fast Trax Motorplex in Chatham, LA, then move on to Thunder Valley Speedway in Union Hill on Saturday night. A $1,000 bonus is available to any driver that can win both events.

Much like the National Tour, the Gulf South Region points race is a tight one, with defending series champion Kelly Angelette of Thibodaux, LA, and Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX, tied for the lead entering the weekend. Todd Johnson, last year's Gulf South Region runner-up, is just eight points back in third, with 17 year-old rookie candidate Sam Hafertepe, Jr., of Sunnyvale, TX, just two more points back in fourth.

Brandon Berryman, also a rookie on the Gulf South Regional tour, is ranked fifth entering the weekend's action, with Cody Pearson, Tina Creswell, Larry Howery, David Forbis and Stephen Chevallier completing the current top ten.

Along with the ASCS Gulf South Region regulars, Michael Dupuy, who finished second in ASCS National points in 2002, is expected for both events this weekend.
