Kulhanek Leads ASCS Gulf South into Louisiana Double
TULSA, Okla. (June 27, 2005) -- Ray Allen Kulhanek carries a two-race win streak and the Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region point lead into this holiday weekend's double dose of racing action in Louisiana on Saturday and Sunday night.
Saturday night, the series makes it second stop of the season at Thunder Valley Speedway in Union Hill, LA, before moving on to Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, LA, on Sunday night.
After winning the series season opener in March, Kulhanek had been shut out of victory lane until the recent South Texas double, where the Danbury, TX, racer stepped to the front of the points race by sweeping the weekend at Motorama Speedway and Houston Raceway Park.
Kulhanek will try to extend his win streak this weekend against a strong field of cars that will include each of the ASCS Gulf South Region contenders along with O'Reilly ASCS National Tour shoe Sam Hafertepe, Jr., of Sunnyvale, TX.
Hafertepe, currently ranked fourth in ASCS National points, topped the Gulf South Region's May 28 stop at Thunder Valley Speedway and will be looking for another victory atop Union Hill's high-banked, quarter-mile clay oval. The Hafertepe team is expected to field a second entry as well with Jeff Day at the helm of the second machine.
While Hafertepe takes advantage of an off weekend for the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour, Kulhanek will try to extend his Gulf South Region point lead over Louisiana shoes Stephen Chevallier and Lane Whittington, who enter the weekend tied for second in points, just 18 markers off the lead pace.
Scottie McDonald of New Caney, TX, enters the weekend fourth in points, just 22 points out of the lead, with Texas City, TX, racer Greg Rilat in fifth. Completing the current top ten are David Kulhanek (Danbury, TX), Chris Sweeney (Humble, TX), Richard Holt (McLeod, TX), Darryl Wills (Deer Park, TX) and Greg Coleman (Hillister, TX).
Approximately 30 entries are expected for both nights of racing action.
