Angelette Leads Way to Leesville for ASCS Gulf South
TULSA, Okla. (July 14, 2003) - In search of a second straight series championship, Kelly Angelette of Thibodaux, LA, leads the way into this Friday night's American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region event at Leesville 171 Speedway in Leesville, LA.
While Angelette won the initial ASCS Gulf South Region championship by a comfortable margin in 2002, this year's battle for the Gulf South title has been a tight one through the first seven events, with only 52 points separating the top four.
Angelette enters Friday night's action with a slim 12 point lead over Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX. ASCS Gulf South Rookie contenders Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Brandon Berryman are currently ranked third and fourth, respectively. Seventeen year-old Hafertepe, from Sunnyvale, TX, is just 24 points out of the lead, while Berryman, hailing from Missouri City, TX, is 52 points back in fourth.
Another rookie contender, Cody Pearson of Sulphur, LA, is putting together a solid season as well, currently ranked fifth in points. Completing the current top ten entering this Friday night's action are Tina Creswell, Todd Johnson, Stephen Chevallier, David Forbis and Harry Yerrington.
Hot laps for Friday night's action get started at 7:00 p.m., with racing slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m.
