Whittington Whittles First ASCS Gulf South Score
BAYTOWN, Tex. (August 20, 2005) -- Lane Whittington picked up his first career Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region feature victory by topping Saturday night's 25-lap feature at Houston Raceway Park.
Starting from the pole, Whittington jumped into the early lead only to see action interrupted for a wild five-car tangle that sent Greg Rilat, Jimmy Brooks and defending series champion Jerry Bell to the pit area. A lap later, another melee sent Richard Cordray, Terry Monroe and Brandon Berryman to the pit area as well.
With the full moon effect out of the way, Whittington led the opening six rounds before A.J. Weaver motored into the lead. Weaver set the pace until Whittington battled back into the lead on the lead on the 18th round as Weaver ran short of fuel.
Whittington raced away from his rivals over the final rounds to score nearly a straightaway victory aboard the Tim's Engines/Wilson Oysters No. 9 J&J, with series point leader Ray Allen Kulhanek overcoming top wing problems to claim second. Chris Sweeney snared the show position, while Brad Stokes was the final car on the lead lap in fourth.
Chris Tarrant raced from 23rd to round out the top five, with Richard Holt, Larry Hartwell, Gary Watson, Weaver and Tim Rock completing the top ten.
David Forbis flipped after contact with the wall in the second heat race, while Charlie Brown destroyed his racer during a lap seven feature tumble. There were no injuries.
Heat race victories were claimed by Kulhanek, Weaver and Rilat.
