South Texas Double on Tap for Hotly-Contested ASCS Gulf South Region Battle
TULSA, Okla. (September 13, 2004) - Embroiled in perhaps the nation's most intense Sprint Car championship points chase, Greg Rilat, Chris Sweeney and Jerry Bell lead the Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region into this weekend's southern Texas double on Friday and Saturday.
A mere six points separate the lead trio of Rilat, Sweeney and Bell as the series makes a return to Waco's Heart O' Texas Speedway on Friday night for the Gordon Wooley Classic, before moving on to Motorama Speedway in Beaumont for the second time this season on Saturday night.
Rilat and Sweeney enter the weekend knotted atop the series point charts, with Bell just six more points back in third. With a half-dozen events remaining on the 2004 ASCS Gulf South Regional slate, fourth-ranked Todd Johnson remains in contention as well, just 53 markers off the lead pace.
Brad Stokes enters the weekend ranked fifth, with Scottie McDonald, Stephen Chevallier, Ray Allen Kulhanek, Richard Holt and Brandon Corn completing the current top ten.
Claud Estes captured his first career ASCS victory when the series invaded Heart O' Texas Speedway for the first time on June 18, while Chevallier became a first time winner as well during the July 9 stop at Motorama Speedway.
Nine different drivers have visited victory lane through the series first ten event of 2004.
