Racin' Cajun Cooks ASCS Gulf South Field at Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, Lou. (April 21, 2006) -- Feeling no ill effects from his recent burns, Jason Johnson scorched Friday night's American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region competition by wiring the field in the 25-lap feature event at Baton Rouge Raceway.

Johnson took command from the outset and led all the way aboard Marvin and Peggy Pearson's Wesmar-powered No. 11 Maxim to score his first ASCS Gulf South feature win of the season.

While the "Racin' Cajun" aced the ASCS Gulf South vs. SUPR outing, the action behind him for second was intense, with younger cousin Ty Johnson holding the spot until well beyond the midway point when Shane Morgan battled into second.

Moments later, Ty Johnson's powerplant expired, with Greg Rilat getting caught up in the ensuing scramble and tumbling down the backstretch after charging from 16th to fifth.

Morgan chased Jason Johnson to the stripe over the final rounds, with defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek advancing from sixth to take the show position. Michael Herrington snared fourth, with Gary Watson rounding out the top five.

Terry Vidrine crossed the stripe sixth, with 15-year-old Channin Tankersley earning the race's Hard Charger award by racing from 17th to seventh. Tommy Bryant was the final car on the lead lap in eighth, with Darrell Hyde and Darryl Wills completing the top ten.

Ty Johnson, Brandon Berryman and Morgan topped heat race action for the 26-car field, with Brad Stokes winning the "B" Main.
