ASCS Gulf South Set for July 4th Weekend of Speed!

TULSA, Okla. (June 30, 2008) -- There will plenty of cash up for grabs as the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region embarks upon three nights of racing action with the July 4th "Weekend of Speed".

The action fires up on Thursday night at South Texas Speedway in Corpus Christi, with Round Two on Friday night at Edna's Texana Raceway Park. Then it all wraps up on Saturday night at 105 Speedway in Cleveland, TX.

A clean sweep of the weekend's action could net one driver $6,300, with $1,100 just to make the "A" Feature over all three nights.

All three feature events offer up a $2,000 winner's share. The South Texas and Texana events offer $400 just to start, with Saturday's 105 Speedway event at $300 to start.

Another $1,000 is available in point fund over the three-night weekend, with $300 earmarked for the driver accumulating the most points over the weekend with the balance distributed among the weekend's top five drivers.

Channelview, TX, shoe Chris Sweeney enters the weekend atop the point charts as he pursues his first series title. Sweeney enters the weekend 34 markers ahead of three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat of Texas City, with 2006 champion Gary Watson of Beaumont just another 22 points back in third.

Tied for fourth in points, just 64 points out of the lead, are defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, and 17-year-old Channin Tankersley of Highland, TX. The balance of the current top ten in points includes Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX), Travis Elliott, Tommy Bryant (Conroe, TX), Terry Monroe (Shreveport, LA) and Travis Knighton (Danbury, TX).

Thursday's action at South Texas Speedway fires off at 8:00 p.m., Friday's card at Texana Raceway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's event at 105 Speedway gets under way at 7:00 p.m.

The semi-banked, 0x00bc-mile South Texas Speedway dirt oval is located in Corpus Christi, two miles southwest of SR 358 on Old Brownsville Road.JFor more information, contact the track at 361-808-7223.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 24 nights of racing action at ten different tracks throughout Texas and Louisiana in 2008.

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with a dozen different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
