Kulhanek Leads ASCS Gulf South to Gator Motorplex
TULSA, Okla. (October 3, 2005) -- Closing in on his first Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region championship, Ray Allen Kulhanek leads the way into this Saturday night's card at Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX.
Saturday's Gator Motorplex event, the series' second Willis stop of the season, is a makeup of the event originally scheduled for September 24, which was postponed by Hurricane Rita.
With just Saturday's Gator go and the October 15 season finale at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, MS, remaining, Kulhanek holds a 104-point edge in the series championship points chase.
Kulhanek, the twenty-two year-old from Danbury, TX, has recorded five feature wins in 17 ASCS Gulf South events this season. Kulhanek topped the season opener at Champion Park Speedway in Haughton, LA, on March 12, and has since picked up victories at Beaumont's Motorama Speedway (June 17), Houston Raceway Park (June 18), Champion Park Speedway (July 30) and Motorama Speedway (August 19).
While Kulhanek tries to secure the title, the battle for second in points is a heated one, with only seven points separating three drivers, including Louisiana racers Stephen Chevallier and Lane Whittington along with Texas City shoe Greg Rilat.
From New Caney, TX, Scottie McDonald enters the event ranked fifth in points. McDonald scored his first career series victory when the series made its Gator Motorplex debut on April 16.
Other top ASCS Gulf South contenders expected Saturday night include Richard Holt, Larry Hartwell, Greg Coleman, Darryl Wills, Chris Sweeney, Terry Monroe, Ty Johnson and Eric Payne.
Also expected are 2003 ASCS National champion Travis Rilat (Forney, TX), two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion Kevin Ramey (Ft. Worth, TX) and fourth-ranked National Tour shoe Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Sunnyvale, TX).
Saturday's racing action is slated to get under way at 7:00 p.m.
Gator Motorplex is located off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd Hill), then east, then 1.4 miles south on SR 75. For more information, call 936-588-6127.
Saturday night at Gator Motorplex, each ASCS Gulf South Region entry will receive ten free gallons of methanol courtesy of Superior Race Fuels.
The Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores ASCS Gulf South Region will contest 19 events at ten different tracks throughout Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi in 2005.
In total, including the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour, the Southern Tour and the Sooner, Gulf South, Rocky Mountain and Midwest Regions, the American Sprint Car Series will sanction nearly 100 nights of racing in 2005 at approximately 50 different racetracks throughout 17 different states.
