October 17, 1998 IN VICTORY LANE AT GREENWOOD VALLEY By Than Mitchell
Rick Tanner, Allenwood, managed to continue his tradition of winning at least one race a year at the Greenwood Valley Action Track. Tanner, who started the Micro Sprint Feature on the pole, never lost the lead from green flag to the checkered. Colby Womer, Mt. Pleasant Mills, ran second throughout the contest until his engine gave up with only two laps remaining in the Feature. Heath Hehnly inherited second and was followed across the line by Ralph Utter, Jr. who makes the drive from New Jersey to The Action Track every weekend. The rest of the top ten included A.J. Walters, Bloomsburg; Brian Kishbaugh, Nescopeck; Chris Smith; Mark Farrell; Jake Park, Rome; Nyle Berkes, Berwick and Eric Heydenreich, Bloomsburg.
Spins and crashes highlighted the Rookie Micro Sprint Feature causing competitors to wonder when the endurance test would end. With a new incident at nearly every restart, the Rookies put in a lot of overtime. Neil Petock prevailed, however, posting his third Rookie victory of the year. In Victory Lane, Petock thanked sponsors, family and friends for the support throughout the racing year. Trailing Petock in the race of attrition were Chad Thomas, New Berlin; Dave Leuthe; Jason Wagner, Port Trevorton; Chad Phillips; Glen Walp; Dick Huzzard, Spring City; John Gross, Harveys Lake; Tom Michaelesko, Freeland and Jay Horvath.
Racing continues through the month of October, including Halloween night. Dress warm, plan to eat your evening meal at one of the fine food stands at the race track, and, weather permitting, take in some fine wheel-to-wheel dirt track action. With only two more race weekends left, join your friends and neighbors at the Greenwood Valley Action Track located 3 1/2 miles east of Millville just off route 254. The gates will open at 2:30 with warm-ups beginning about 4:30. See you at the Action Track.
