IN VICTORY LANE AT GREENWOOD VALLEY By Than Mitchell Date: Sept 19, 1998
Jason Rice told a cheering crowd at the Greenwood Valley Action Track that his win on Saturday night was one of the most important in his career as car owner, Ralph Delp Jr., family and friends spent the evening remembering racing enthusiast Ralph Delp Sr. who passed away last week after a long illness. The night began with a brief memorial service for the elder Delp, and ended with Rice, a native of Easton, bringing the #45 home first in the Micro Sprint Feature. Unable to catch Rice and finishing second Joe Bednarski, Wyoming, followed closely by Jason Kemp of Bloomsburg. Fourth place went to Ray Bull, Reading, then; David Utt, Bloomsburg; Jeff Furlong, Selinsgrove; Skeetz Hockenbrock, Paxinos; Troy "Buster" Whitesell, Selinsgrove; Colby Womer, Mt. Pleasant Mills and Joel VanBuskirk, Selinsgrove.
Rookie Micro Sprint driver, Eric Heydenreich, Bloomsburg, gave himself an early birthday present. Heydenreich, who will soon turn 18, led from green to checkered after starting on the pole. Several yellow flags during the Feature repeatedly bunched up the field, but gave Heidenreich a clear track with little worry about overtaking lapped cars. Heydenreich's goal is to move to full sized sprint cars and with the talent displayed on Saturday night, the goal is a possibility. Chasing Heidenreich across the line was Scott Lawrence, Conklin, NY followed by Ralph Utter, Jr, New Milford,NJ; Chad Thomas, New Berlin; Jake Park, Rome; Ralph Ferraro; Geoff Hogan, Plymouth; Bree Boyer, Bloomsburg; Don "The Snake" Hildebrandt, Nazareth and Jerrett Seng, Orefield.
Our thoughts go out to the long time fans and supporters of racing now missing from our midst; Ralph Delp Sr, Buck Creveling, and Ronnie Tobias. Close bonds within the racing family help the families and friends of these fine men. Though their checkered flags have waved, we'll honor their memory by continuing to make dust and eat it.
Next Saturday night is the last night for accumulating points toward the end of the season standings. Join friends and family for late season, oval, dirt track racing at the Greenwood Valley Action Track located 3 ½ miles east of Millville. Gates will open at 3, warm-ups at 5:30 and wheel to wheel action will get underway at about 6 this coming Saturday night, please plan to join
