Jeff Furlong nailed the set-up just right at The Greenwood Valley Action Track, Saturday night, in the Racers' Memorial Tribute, 30 lap Feature for Micro Sprints. After earning the pole in his Heat Race, the Selinsgrove resident followed up with the pole in the Feature, also. Taking the lead from his inside position when the green flag waved, Furlong on through 40 laps of racing and nearly 60 laps of yellow flag laps caused by numerous flips and spins. Furlong took home $500 for winning, plus lap money and added winnings provided by fans and sponsors who are strong supporters of The Action Track and its competitors. Second place went to Rick Tanner, third to Wyoming's Joe Bednarski, and fourth to Colby Womer, Mt. Pleasant Mills. Brian Scandle, Stonington, managed a fifth place finish, and recent graduate from the Rookie Division, Eric Heydenreich, was sixth. Wrapping up the field was Eric Perchak, Hazelton, Scott Kishbaugh, Nescopeck, Steve Lenig, Selinsgrove and Nick Lannan, Montoursville.
Memorial Day '99 will be memorable for the Ferri family as young Jared Ferri came home the winner after a sold performance in the Rookie Micro Sprint Feature and moves to the Regular Micro Sprint ranks. After Ferri, at the finish, was Geoff Hogan, second and Ashley Parlett in third. Fourth was Mike Keppler, Bechtelsville, Scott Lawrence, Conklin, NY, and A.J. Bast, Tower City was sixth. Lee Benjamin crossed the line in seventh place while Tom Michaelesko, Freeland, captured an eighth. Ninth to finish was Abe Messersmith and wrapping it up was John Gross, Harveys Lake in tenth place.
Many thanks to patrons of racing for helping to add to the rewards for the hard-driving racers at the Greenwood Valley Action Track. Trophies for the kart classes were donated and presented by Brian Wawroski, an Action Track competitor and sponsor, on behalf of his company, Commercial Stainless in Bloomsburg. Steve Lenig, owner of Nye's Body Shop in Sunbury, presented merchandise to the first King Chassis car across the line and $20 to the competitor finishing ninth in the Micro Sprint Feature. Some would say it was irony which brought Steve home ninth, others might argue something else!
Next Saturday night the season will continue at The Greenwood Valley Action Track with competitors racing for the all-important Division points. You're invited to be there to share the fun and excitement at The Action Track. Gates open at 3:30, warm-ups begin at 5:30, and racing at 6:30. See you at the races.
