VERNON, NY - The month of September will conclude the 2001 race season at Utica-Rome Speedway on Route 5 in Vernon. Scheduled at the historic track are three big shows to help the 40th anniversary season go out with a bang.
Sunday September 2 will bring "America's Race Cars" back to Utica-Rome for the first time since 1996. Yes, that's the world famous alcohol powered winged Empire Super Sprints which will be turning lightning quick record lap times on the fast Utica-Rome half-mile. The top drivers in Sprint Car racing from all over the Northeastern United States and Canada will all be on hand for this extra special event. Also scheduled will be the DIRT 358-Modifieds plus the final points shows for the DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots. Race time is set for 6pm.
Sunday September 9 will be time to have fun with the return of the popular Modified "Run Whatcha' Brung" event to Utica-Rome Speedway. It will be just like the days and times of the Outlaw Circuit, with sail panels, alcohol, drag rubber, wings, and other things in the Modified division. The only rule that applies is that ONLY SMALL BLOCK ENGINES OF ANY TYPE WILL BE ALLOWED, and race fans are sure to see some wild creations on hand. Modified teams from tracks such as Penn-Can, East Windsor, Thunder Mountain, Afton, Woodhull, Five Mile Point, and many others including non-DIRT sanctioned speedways are welcome. Also racing will be the DIRT Sportsman ($500 to win), DIRT Pro Stocks ($400 to win), Pure Stocks ($300 to win), and Slingshots, with racing taking the green at 6pm.
Sunday September 16 will end the 2001 race season at Utica-Rome in grand style with the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series for the Nice N' Easy Grocery Shoppes / F.X. Caprara Car Companies 100-lap event. The best drivers of the DIRT 358-Modified division will all be on hand in this extra distance special to cap off the year. Also scheduled will be the biggest race for the year for the DIRT Pro Stock division featuring Automotive Recyclers Association of New York Pro Stock Super DIRT Series in a 25-lap special as well as the Pure Stock division in a feature only. Starter Dick Sweet will drop the final green flag of the year at 6pm on Sunday September 16.
Immediately following the final race of the year will be a complete resurfacing of the speedway. New clay will be laid down beginning Monday September 17, and will have all winter long to cure and settle. Expect a fast rock free track surface for the 2002-racing season!
