SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's been several years in the making but the joining of two strong forces in 360 sprint car racing will come to fruit in the 2004 season. The Empire Super Sprints (ESS) will be a part of the racing season at the Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pa. Promoter Vicki Emig has been a big supporter of 360 sprint cars with many sanctions making a visit to the 3/8th mile oval and with two visits by ESS the list continues to grow.
On Saturday, May 15th, ESS will being their stars and cars to Mercer and joins the best of the Mercer faithful as well as top drivers from the National Racing Alliance (NRA) in a special 25 lap event that pays $1500 to the winner. The event will be a big part of the Western Pa. Sprint Championships which also will see 410 and 305 sprinters on the same card.
Mercer is the home of defending ESS champion Mike Lutz and although the 2003 champ's plans are still up in the air, he does plan to carry the ESS championship banner on this night in hopes of being the first driver under the checkered flag. Along with Lutz, ESS stars such as Justin Barger, Dan Kaszubinski, John Karklin Jr., Lance Yonge and many others will take on NRA's best in Dwain Leiber, Darren Long, Mike Brecht and J.R. Stewart as well as the best from the home turf in Scott Bonnell, the winner of the 2003 Bully Hill Nationals, 360 champ Chris Matthews, former ESS feature winner and now Mercer regular Chris Shuttleworth, Jeff Banyas and Pup Nystrom.
ESS Tour 2004 will make a return appearance on Sat. Sept. 18th as a part of the big 360 Nationals which will award the champion over $3,000 from the $20,000 plus purse. Along with Mercer and NRA, stars from the Knoxville Raceway and the Patriot Sprint Group will be a part of the event with more than 50 of the best 360 stars in action.
