Jeff Cook Powers to $2,100 Empire Super Sprint Victory at Autodrome Edelweiss Speedway.
CANTLEY, QC -- In a true display of power and speed, Antwerp, N.Y.'s Jeff Cook went around the outside of race long leader Tommy Wickham on lap 21 to win the Lucas Oil Canadian Invasion Series event at Autodrome Edelweiss Speedway. The victory was his first of the 2007 season on the tour brought to you by Jacobs Motorsports and he also collected $2,100 in cash by winning the Northwood 2 Construction sponsored A-Main.
"This car was just awesome all night. We didn't change a bar or a shock, nothing except the right rear tire and it didn't miss a beat." Cook mentioned of his Rt. 37 Building Supply Maxim. "But, I do have a story for you, that right rear is a D20 (the hardest compound in ESS' Hoosier tire rule). We smoked the 15 in the heat so we made a switch. Plus, since the cushion was so heavy it would help keep the car loose so I could run up high. It was a hunch, but I guess it worked out pretty good."
The 25 lap A-Main was a tale of two stories. Wickham started his Jerry's Auto Specialties #75 J&J on the pole. The second year driver has been fast but snake bit on finishing races. When the green flag dropped, he took off and built up a big lead on the field in hopes of his first ever ESS A-Main checkered flag.
The second story of course was Cook and his charge to the front. After starting in fifth, he was in fourth on lap one, third on lap 9 and by a fast running Michael Parent on lap 14 for second. While Wickham was marred in lapped traffic, Cook was gaining some but time was short.
Then on lap 17, the big break came for the driver who has six career ESS victories to his credit. The yellow lights shined for a spun Justin Harris in turn two. This bunched up the field and more importantly put Cook on Wickham's rear nerf bar. When the green was waved again, it was Wickham holding the top spot but Cook was ready for the challenge.
Coming down to score lap 21, Cook used the ample cushion to make the pass and a lead that he wouldn't surrender. A lap 24 caution for a spun Jared Zimbardi just as the field was ready to take the checkered flag did add to the drama, but, Cook never bobbled and brought home a well earned vistory.
Wickham's first ever ESS triumph will have to wait another night, but a career best finish was the outcome. Parent continues to impress with the Les Ultra Constructions F5 for a fine third with Mike Stelter and Steve Poirier rounding out the top five. The next five was defending champion Alain Bergeron, Cory Sparks, Justin Barger, Jeff VanDusen and two-time champ Lance Yonge.
The two cautions for the spins on lap 17 and 24 were the only ones in the A-Main.
Taking the Car Mate Custom Built Trailer heat events were Wickham, Parent and Cook with the Service de Pneus Capitale/Walt's Hobby Dash won by Wickham.
ESS/EDELWEISS NOTES: All in ESS was very saddened by the loss suffered by Edelweiss promoter Serge Lagace' as his wife passed away the night prior to the event. She loved sprint cars and would want the event to go on. A special moment of silence was held with all the ESS cars lined up on the front stretch prior to the start of the A-Main...Brian McDonald was slated to run the Lucas Oil 358 Series event at Autodrome Granby but with the event rained out, he unloaded his small block and picked up the sprinter to race at Edelweiss...The Jacobs Motorsports Tour and the Lucas Oil Canadian Invasion Series will make another stop to the track just North of Ottawa on August 17th for another $2,000 to win event.
