Bubby Kerrick Ready for a Successful Season with the Empire Super Sprints.
STANLEY, N.Y. -- It was a warm Friday evening in Brockville, Ontario, Canada on August 15th of last year and there was a feel good story to be told when the 25 lap A-Main concluded for the Empire Super Sprints. Sitting in victory lane for the first time ever was Stanley, N.Y.'s Bubby Kerrick. It was a win not only welcomed by family and friends but also by fellow competitors. That victory propelled the driver of the familiar red #61 to a seventh place in the season long point standings.
Kerrick has been an ESS faithful since 1996 and with the 21st Anniversary Tour getting ready to rumble on May 15th at the Mercer Raceway Park, the likeable driver is ready to tackle what is hoped to be his most successful season to date. A new "Big Max" Maxim with Kriner power is at the ready and with a parts arsenal to handle a 32 date tour, Kerrick has his sites on a possible top five placing in the final ESS points for 2004.
"We are coming into this season with the best equipment ever, the best backing and with the monkey finally off my back with the win last August, we have a new confidence." said Kerrick who came through the street stock ranks at the Black Rock Speedway where he was a multi-time feature winner. "It was just such a relief to get the first win, it was so long and you just kept on wondering if it will ever happen. I always felt that we had good enough equipment and I thought I was good enough behind the wheel but for some reason the breaks never came our way."
But, on that cozy Friday night in Canada, all the chips fell the right way for Bubby Kerrick and a very emotional victory lane greeted the standing room only crowd at the quarter-mile in Brockville. Now the goal is to collect more checkered flags and a move up the ESS point ladder.
"We are coming into the ESS season the best shape we have ever been in. With some great help from Billy Colton and Krissy Dow at Troyer Engineering everything we have is brand new but the motor." noted Kerrick. "I just can't wait until the season gets started in May. ESS has some of the best drivers around in the Northeast and I'm ready to give them a challenge."
While Troyer's is the main backer for this years effort, big support also comes from Rich Van Keuren Trucking, Clair Kerrick Trucking, long-time friend Matt Gysel and also from Dave Ely at DMI. But, while the added dollars is always key, Kerrick is also quick to point out the priceless help from family and crew.
"I just have to thank my wife (Jennifer), my father (Clair) and the kids. Even though ESS is big-time sprint car racing, it's still a family atmosphere and you need their support -- I have some of the best behind me." Kerrick then continued, "And, you also have to thank your crew, Dad, Dave, Butch and Matt. They will do anything for me to make sure the car makes it to the next race."
The entire 32 race Empire Super Sprints Tour 2004 will be the focus with a return trip to the famed Knoxville Raceway and the Tournament of Champions on the agenda. "We plan on running the entire ESS schedule again for this year." said Bubby for this year's plans. "We just feel that is the best for us as ESS pays the best money and they just treat us like family. To run with guys like Lance Yonge, Dan Kaszubinski and others not only are they great drivers but they are friends as well. That makes sprint car racing fun for us."
Bubby Kerrick finally got his name in the headlines with ESS in 2003, now there's a new hop in his step for 2004 and rivals better get ready for the challenge. From Quebec to Iowa and everywhere in between, Kerrick and the rest of the stars and cars of ESS are ready to put on a show for you.
