GRANBY, Qué., June 25, 2000—Veteran driver Claude Brouillard from Tracy, Qué., at the steering of the Castrol/Troyer owned by ex-driver Claude Marcoux, put an end to a six season winningless streak, last Friday night at Autodrome Granby. He was able to do so by winning the 20-lap feature race in the Modified 358 division in front of Réal Lafrance and American driver, Chad Miller. For one, Mike Woodring registered his fifth win at this speedplant with a spectacular demonstration of his skill in the 20-lap Empire Super Sprints feature.
Sixth at the green flag, Brouillard only took a lap to find himself on the back bumper of Richard Chauvin and then, get by him on the first restart of that race. After, Brouillard was able to keep his pace. He only had to keep an eye on Réal Lafrance, the points’ leader in the standings. Eleventh at the start, Lafrance had to challenge Kayle Robidoux during five laps for the second spot. Then, with five laps remaining, Chad Miller was able to do so on Robidoux to take the third spot. As for Clément Therrien, he was forced to watch that race from the pits. The motor of his Excavation Martin Roy/Teo refusing to go on.
The well-known Mike Woodring of ESS, the points’ leader in this series, gave a good demonstration of his skill in the 20-lap feature. Tenth on the grid, Woodring took advantage of the only restart to get by the three front runners and take the lead. After that, he never had to look back. It was an easy win for Woodring who had the best on Lance Yonge and Rob Dietrick.
For this first of two visits of the Empire Super Sprints at Autodrome Granby this season, young rookie Alain Bergeron had a lot of pressure. The Subaru/Carquest driver was able to finish 15th. Unfamiliar with concrete walls all around the track, Bergeron decided to play it safe to finish that race for his hometown fans in the stands.
In the Late Models division, Éric Archambault took the win. He had the best on Jocelyn Perreault and Roland Hébert. The other winners were Stéphane Langlois (Tourism) and Patrick Dupont (4 Cylinders).
