Last Lap Pass Gives Justin Barger an Exciting Empire Super Sprint victory at Autodrome Drummond.

DRUMMONDVILLE, QC -- John Karklin Jr.'s JCK Timber #69K led 23 and one quarter laps Saturday night at Autodrome Drummond during the Spectro Oils Canadian Invasion event for the Empire Super Sprints (ESS). But, each ESS A-Main is set for 25 tours and Montrose, N.Y.'s Justin Barger took full advantage as he came from his 12th place starting spot to sweep past Karklin to lead lap 24 and on to the checkered flag for his first triumph of 2006.

Barger's #32 Cortlandt Auto Body backed #32 Maxim was fast all night and used different lanes on the tricky oval to pick off his competitors and eventually Karklin as well for ESS career victory #4. I had a good car but had to take my time to get by the cars. We only had those yellows in the middle, we went green for a long time and it's tough to catch the cars when you stay green." said Barger who made his return to ESS competition after a stint with USAC. "I knew John was leading, I was just hoping the lapped cars would slow him down enough so I could catch him and hopefully pass him."

That was indeed the scenario as the first 12 laps went green along with the final 13. It was a combination of the track getting a bit rough and the slower traffic that spelled doom for Karklin but was the blessing for Barger. "After we went green for the second half of the race, the track started to get choppy and I really couldn't come off the corners any more." said Karklin, who was looking to duplicate his dash victory earlier. "When I hit a bump it made the car too tight and I couldn't steer. I was just waiting for someone to go past and hen Justin did I knew I lost the win."

For Barger, that was just enough as he made the pass for the win which saw the young driver take over the point lead on the Tour for ESS. "We have been close a few times this year. When I stopped racing the track and raced the cars we started to make some moves." noted Barger on his run. "We just have to keep the luck going, it's a long season."

At the drop of Danny Mulligan's checkered flag, it was Barger ahead of Karklin for the win in front of a big crowd. Doug Norrie took a solid third place finish and that gives him an early lead on the Spectro Oils Canadian Invasion points. Quebec's Alain Bergeron took fourth with Jessica Zemken in fifth. For Zemken however, she was set back two spots for jumping on a restart that moved Jeff Cook up to fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Dan Kaszubinski, Zemken, who still earned the Lane's Yamaha hard charger bonus, Kaszubinski's teammate Nick Fratto, local favorite Steve Poirier, who came back from a flat tire on lap 12 and Matt Norrie in for tenth.

Jeff VanDusen stopped to bring out the caution on lap 12. The first restart saw Poirier stop with his flat tire, the second try brought out the red flag when Russ Bennett and George Ely got together with Bennett's sprinter going over.

Taking the Car Mate Trailers heat events were Kyle Drum, Karklin Jr., and Bergeron. The 4 Saisons Foundation/FM Industries/Walt's Hobby Dash was won by Karklin Jr. with the KSE Racing Products B-Main taken by Zemken.

ESS/DRUMMOND NOTES: A total of 27 cars entered the night's event--The event marked the 600th sanctioned event in the 24 year history of the 360 sprint car sanctioning body--Good to see former ESS star Ryan Coniam on hand for the weekend. He was helping out the Zemken crew--A special spot light introduction of the A-Main starting line-up with fireworks was a huge hit with both fans and ESS competitors--The winged warriors will make their return to Quebec's oldest running dirt track on July 28th and Sept. 2nd.
