Williamson, NY - Mike Emhof, of Sodus, NY, powered his Pace Electronics/Heluva Good Foods sponsored mini sprint to his second Central New York Mini Sprint (CNYMS) Tour feature win of the 2001 season, taming the fast clay oval at McKean County Speedway, East Smethport, PA, on July 28th. He is the first repeat winner on the CNYMS tour this year.
Emhof started on the pole and easily won his heat race; the luck of the draw relegated him to the sixth starting position for the 20 lap feature. Blase Regina, from Altamont, NY, was lined up in fourth, in front of Emhof. "I think we set the tone for the feature on the first lap," said Emhof. "On the start, I saw Blase go outside and high, and I decided to follow him through." The pair shot past the top three cars, and coming out of turn 2, Regina was first and Emhof second. On the third lap, Regina drifted high, and Emhof took the lead. He was able to hold off all comers throughout the rest of the caution-plagued event. The win was Emhof's 11th career CNYMS feature win.
Tour points leader Lance O'Dell (Oneonta, NY) was second and James Brush (Newfoundland, PA) was third. With his victory, Emhof moved into second in the CNYMS Tour points standings.
Emhof and the rest of the Branich Motorsports team will travel to tackle the high banks of Woodhull (NY) Speedway on August 4th, then on to Canandaigua (NY) Speedway on August 11th. The team will also be making two appearances for team sponsor Heluva Good Foods. On Friday, August 10th, the team will travel to the Buffalo Bills training camp in Rochester, NY, to participate in the Heluva Good Foods VIP Day. On August 22nd, the cars will be on display on the Heluva Good Country Store in Sodus, NY.
