Ely Expected to be Out for Five Weeks

SINKING SPRING, Pa., Aug. 28 - Young sprint car star Dave Ely of Sinking Spring, Pa., suffered a fractured clavicle (collarbone) and a concussion in an accident during an All Star Circuit of Champions "King of the Hill" race Wednesday night at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa. He will be out of action for approximately five weeks, but he hopes to be back on the track in time for the prestigious "National Open" World of Outlaws race at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa. on Oct. 2-3.

The accident occurred on a restart of the 40-lap feature when Ely was battling for second with Greg Hodnett. Contact was made and Ely flipped wildly several times in the third and fourth turn, badly damaging his sprinter. He was treated and released at a local hospital, but he wasn't admitted.

The night had started out great for the Ely-Gilbert team, as Ely was fourth-fastest in time trials with a clocking of 12.114 seconds around the one-third mile clay oval. That was only 0.275 of a second off Hodnett's new one-lap track record. He then finished a strong fourth in his heat.

The team has a spare Eagle chassis and a Davy Brown-prepped motor which will be ready for Ely upon his return to the wheel in about a month.
