Wright to Defend Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals Title in O'Reilly ASCS Season Finale
TULSA, Okla. (October 18, 2004) - With a virtual lock on his first O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers championship, Hooks, TX, hotshoe Gary Wright leads the way into this Friday and Saturday night's 31st Annual Devil's Bowl Speedway Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX.
The winningest driver in ASCS history, Wright has extended his career ASCS win total to 90 with a series' high nine triumphs this season to amass a 156 point lead over 2003 ASCS National champion Travis Rilat.
With 31 top-ten finishes in 32 feature events, including 25 top-five runs, Wright needs to simply take a green flag on both nights this weekend to secure the series championship. Wright will have more than just taking a green flag in mind though, as he looks to top the $5,000-to-win Winter Nationals for an unprecedented sixth time in a row.
Wright has captured each running of the Devil's Bowl ASCS Winter Nationals since 1999. The last driver other than Wright to capture victory honors at the late season event atop the famed black clay oval was Garry Lee Maier, who won in 1998. Other winners of the event include Mike Peters in 1997 and Johnny Herrera in 1996.
While Wright has come out on top on the big money night each of the past five seasons, Tim Crawley and Wayne Johnson have each scored preliminary night wins the past two seasons.
While Wright leads Rilat by 156 markers entering the weekend, Rilat is just 72 points ahead of third-ranked Zach Chappell, the 2001 series champion. Poised to put the finishing touches on his best points ranking thus far, Toby Brown enters the weekend ranked fourth, with three-time 2004 feature winner Darren Stewart in fifth.
Leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender A.G. Rains enters the weekend ranked sixth in points, with 1992 champion Garry Lee Maier in seventh. 2003 COMP Cams Newcomer of the Year Jimmy Taylor enters the weekend ranked eighth in points, just 47 points ahead of Cody Branchcomb. Sam Hafertepe, Jr., rounds out the current top ten entering the season's final weekend, 180 points ahead of fellow Rookie contender Natalie Sather of Fargo, ND.
Zach Chappell and Toby Brown will both complete a fifth consecutive season of perfect attendance on the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour with this weekend's double. Neither driver has missed an ASCS National Tour event since late 1999.
Approximately 50 entries are expected for this weekend's O'Reilly ASCS Winter Nationals at Devil's Bowl Speedway, with racers throughout the land making the trek to Mesquite, TX.
Racing action is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night. Devil's Bowl Speedway is located six miles east of Dallas' I-635 on US 80, then three miles south on Lawson Road. For more information, contact the track at 972-222-2421.
