13th Annual COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek Kicks off Friday!
TULSA, Okla. (May 31, 2005) -- The much-anticipated 13th Annual COMP Cams American Sprint Car Series Speedweek for the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores, which features seven nights of action packed racing over the course of nine days throughout Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, kicks off this Friday night.
Upwards of twenty or more teams are expected to vie for COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek championship honors, with approximately 100 drivers expected to compete in at least one event.
The opening two rounds take place in the Memphis hotbed of Sprint Car racing on opposite sides of the Mississippi River, with Memphis Motorsports Park hosting the opening round on Friday night. The next night, the Speedweek forces move to the Arkansas side of the river to invade the legendary Riverside Speedway in West Memphis.
After an off night, a pair of Oklahoma tracks hosts the next two legs of ASCS Speedweek. Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, just across the state line from Ft. Smith, is on tap for Monday night, June 6, with Tulsa Speedway ready for action on Tuesday night, June 7.
A day of rest on Wednesday, June 8, sets the stage for the final three nights of ASCS Speedweek action, with Speedweek returning to Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, on Thursday night, June 9. The next night, 67 Texarkana Speedway in Arkansas is the venue, with Little Rock's I-30 Speedway the battleground for the seventh and final leg of the 13th Annual COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek.
A strong field of contenders is expected to vie for Speedweek championship honors, led by defending O'Reilly ASCS National champion and five-time Speedweek champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX. Wright has notched the most career ASCS Speedweek feature wins, making it to victory lane 21 times in 80 Speedweek events contested since 1993.
Wright enters Speedweek with just a 24-point lead in the ASCS National points chase over Bixby, OK, ace Darren Stewart. Stewart, shooting for his first Speedweek crown, has topped the Tri-State Speedway leg of Speedweek in each of the last two years.
Other O'Reilly ASCS National Tour regulars that will vie for Speedweek title honors include Jan Howard (Byhalia, MS), Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Sunnyvale, TX), Toby Brown (Carthage, MO), A.G. Rains (West Memphis, AR), Jimmy Taylor (Oklahoma City, OK), Natalie Sather (Fargo, ND) and Brodix Rookie of the Year contenders Jake Martens (Fairview, OK) and Tony Bruce, Jr. (Liberal, KS).
Hafertepe tuned up for Speedweek by capturing his first feature victory of the season in Saturday night's ASCS Gulf South Region event at Thunder Valley Speedway in Union Hill, LA, while former Riverside Speedweek winner Rains prevailed in weekly competition at Riverside.
A number of travelers will make a bid for the Speedweek crown, including Eugene, OR, hotshoe Roger Crockett and Minnesota's Dustin Lindquist.
Defending ASCS Speedweek champion and three-time ASCS National champion Tim Crawley of Mabelvale, AR, will be back to take a shot at two Speedweek titles in a row, with teammate and California native Steven Tiner in tow.
Several Memphis-area drivers will make a bid for Speedweek honors as well, including Mike Ward, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., and Dale Howard.
Norman, OK, veteran shoe Danny Wood is expected to make at least five of seven Speedweek stops, if not all, while Louisiana native Jason Johnson will fly in from Pennsylvania for Rounds Three and Four at Tri-State Speedway and Tulsa Speedway.
Numerous other top contenders will drop in on each night's racing action as well.
In addition to COMP Cams, other ASCS Speedweek sponsors include Southwest Trucking, The Shop Diesel Service, Pro Lube Center of Mustang, OK, and Richwood Construction.
