PIKE COUNTY SET FOR ASCS REGIONAL CLASH ON SATURDAY
TULSA, Okla. (October 1, 2007) -- A pair of American Sprint Car Series Regional championships will be determined this Saturday night when the ASCS Gulf South and ASCS Coastal Regions clash at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, MS.
The season-ending event for both series offers up a $2,000 winner's share atop the high-banked, 3/8-mile dirt oval.
While Louisiana's Michael Dupuy has virtually clinched the inaugural ASCS Coastal Region championship, Texas gunner Brandon Berryman clings to a slim Gulf South lead entering Saturday night's event.
Holding a 92-point lead on the strength of five feature wins in 15 events, Dupuy can put the title away by simply showing up on Saturday night. The show-up points will put Dupuy out of the reach of Michael Herrington, who enters the event ranked second in Coastal points.
Shane Morgan, Todd Fayard and Robert Casada round out the current top five in Coastal Region points, with the balance of the top ten including Hunter Phillips, Tim Thrash, Lane Whittington, Chris Sweeney and Terry Gray.
The ASCS Gulf South championship battle is a different situation however, with Berryman just 14 points ahead of Skip Wilson. A winner of four ASCS Gulf South events this season, Berryman can stay out of Wilson's reach and secure his first series title with a finish of sixth or better.
While Wilson is 14 points behind Berryman, he is also just 14 points ahead of 2006 series champion Gary Watson, who clings to an outside chance of snagging a second consecutive championship.
Chris Sweeney enters the event ranked fourth, 44 points off of Berryman's pace, with Greg Rilat in fifth. The balance of the top ten in ASCS Gulf South points includes Tommy Bryant, Ray Allen Kulhanek, Kathryne Minter, Jimmy Brooks and Johnny Miller.
Saturday's ASCS Coastal vs. Gulf South action at Pike County Speedway fires off at 8:00 p.m.
Pike County Speedway is located near Magnolia, MS, off I-55 Exit 8, then 0.2 miles east on Gillsburg Road. For more information, contact the track at 601-783-2500.
The ASCS Coastal Region 2007 slate consists of 16 events at ten different tracks throughout Mississippi and the surrounding area including portions of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
After ten rainouts this year, the 2007 slate for the ASCS Gulf South Region consists of 14 events at eight different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
