Kuerner Wins CNYMS Event at Devil's Bowl

West Haven, VT: Patrick Kuerner of Marlborough, CT has had a monkey on his back for all but two race weekends this season. He shook that monkey off at Canandaigua and Cayuga County two weekends ago with a sixth and fifth place finish respectively. With momentum on his side when the Central New York Mini Sprint (CNYMS) series rolled into Devil's Bowl Speedway this past Sunday evening, Kuerner went out and scored his first CNYMS win.

Kuerner started off the night by winning his heat race. Cory Sparks of Scotia, NY continued his heat race winning ways by capturing the second qualifier. The redraw for the feature line-up put Kuerner on the outside front row and Sparks in the eighth starting position.

When the green flag flew to kick off the 15-lap main event, Kuerner quickly jumped out ahead of polesitter Dale Beach Jr. of Franklin, NY. By the second circuit, Kuerner had stretched out a big lead on the field, but Sparks was on the move and was already in second place with sights on the leader. On lap 5, Sparks had caught Kuerner and made a pass for the point coming off turn 2.

Kuerner kept pace for a couple of laps before Sparks started to stretch his lead. With the two frontrunners distanced from the pack, the battle was on for the third position. Jamie Kiser of Whitesboro, NY and Jared Fink of Germantown, NY battled for the position, swapping on numerous occasions before Kiser got the upper hand. Waiting to pounce for position in fifth was Milford, NY's Don Harvey, Jr. Harvey and Fink battled for a couple of laps before Fink would lose one more position to fifth.

While the racing was going on behind him, Sparks was making his way through lapped traffic. With just a few laps remaining, Sparks made contact as he came upon Dennis Fink on the low side in turn three. This brought out the only caution of the race. Sparks and Dennis Fink found themselves refiring on the tail end of the field and Kuerner found himself looking at a clear race track as the pack took the green to the wire.

Kuerner held off Kiser at the checkers. Harvey, Jared Fink, and Sparks rounded out the top five. Kiser would be relegated to an eighth place finish for a race procedure infraction. The 3rd through 7th positions moved up a spot in the finishing order, giving the fifth position to Dale Beach Jr.

CNYMS will celebrate the 4th of July with a race at Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday. It is CNYMS's sole visit to the 'ultra fast' half-mile facility and will be the undercard to the Empire Super Sprint series event topping the program. The race will kick off the A-Verdi Storage Containers Super Series for the CNYMS competitors.
