Harvey Scores First CNYMS Win of the Season at Albany-Saratoga

Malta, NY -- Don Harvey, Jr. of Oneonta, NY was on a mission when he arrived at the fast 4/10-mile Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, NY this past Friday night. Harvey is in a tight championship battle with Scotia, NY's Cory Sparks and was hoping to close the gap a bit with a victory. Twenty-one cars arrived to do battle for the win.

Harvey began his mission with a win in the first heat race of the night, edging out Jeff VanDusen. But, not to be outdone, Sparks went out and won the second heat race of the night. The heat races amounted to a wash in any hopes of gaining points on Sparks.

As the field took to the track for the 15-lap shootout, Harvey jumped out to the early lead on lap one with Sparks keeping pace. Mike Emhof of Sodus quickly moved up to third position just ahead of Marc Guerard in the #95. Caution slowed the field when the #18 of James Kiser of Whitesboro, NY and Jeremy Quick of got their winged warriors on their sides in turn 2. Without injury to man or machine, both resumed when the field went green.

The front three of Harvey, Sparks and Emhof remained the same until lap five when VanDusen relieved Emhof of the third position. Emhof settled into fourth followed by Guerard in fifth. A brief caution bunched the field back up on lap 6.

On the ensuing restart, it was a race to the checkers with Harvey bringing home the win. Sparks tried to keep pace in the second half of the race, but drifted backwards until finding a spot out on the cushion to run. Running the outside groove, Sparks did make it interesting as the checkers flew, finishing second by just a car length. VanDusen finished a solid third position followed by Emhof turning in his best performance of the season in fourth. Jared Fink's fifth place finish was enough to hold down the third spot in points.

This Saturday night, the Central New York Mini Sprint Series returns to the super-fast 3/8-mile speedplant of Skyline Speedway in Virgil, NY. For more information about CNYMS, log on to www.cnyms.com.
