Harvey Goes Two-for-Two at Albany-Saratoga with CNYMS

Malta, NY -- The Central New York Mini Sprints (CNYMS) rolled back into the Albany-Saratoga Speedway this past Friday evening with 26 competitors. Skies threatened the program, but the track persisted and won the battle to complete the show. The big winner for the night was Oneonta's Don Harvey. Harvey charged from a twelfth place starting position to capture his second win at the "Great Race Place" in 2004.

Before the 'A' Main hit the track, the field was set through three qualifying heat races. Germantown's Jared Fink, Scotia's Cory Sparks, and Sodus' Mike Emhof each captured wins in their respective heat races.

Twenty-two cars took the green flag in the 'A' Main. After the redraw for position, Mike Emhof drew the pole. Emhof jumped to the front early as the feature rolled, but a caution on lap one for Lee Babcock of Mexico, NY was the first of three incidences that would slow action in the 15-lap event.

When action resumed, Emhof took off from the pack with Oneonta's Garry Moore trailing early in second. On lap six, Emhof's race ended with a mechanical failure. On the same lap, Marshall Gogg of Stone Ridge and James Tomlinson of Westport, NY also retired from action.

On the ensuing restart, Moore was unable to hold off the charging duo of Sparks and Fink. As Sparks stretched out his lead and Fink maintained second, Harvey moved to third position on lap eight as Moore dropped to fourth and Brint Hockenberry of Ickesburg, PA rounded out the top five. On lap nine, Harvey made the pass on Fink to capture the second position and to set sights on the leader.

As the field was given five to go, the motor let go in the Sparks ride, ending all hopes for a win at his home track in the 2004 season.

With less than a handful of laps remaining, the pack was bunched together for a shootout. Harvey got a great start and was able to hold off Fink at the checkers for his second win of the season at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Fink finished second followed by Moore and Hockenberry. Sodus' Bobby Sergeant turned his tenth place starting position into a fifth place finish.

The CNYMS tour moves on to Frogtown International Speedway in Hogansburg, NY this Saturday evening. Pit gates open at 5:00pm and racing starts at 7:00pm.
