O'Reilly ASCS champion to be crowned at Devil's Bowl Speedway Winter Nationals this weekend.
TULSA, Okla. (October 13, 2003) - The year-long battle for the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers championship comes to a conclusion with this weekend's 30th Annual Devil's Bowl Speedway Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX, on Friday and Saturday night.
After battling over the course of 41 nights at 25 different tracks throughout nine states, Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, enters this weekend's action with a narrow 34-point lead over Gary Wright of Hooks, TX. 2001 series champion Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, also retains a mathematical chance at the title, 80 points off the pace.
The championship contenders will face plenty of rugged competition for the $5,000 winner's share, as more than 50 cars from throughout the nation are expected for the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour season finale atop the famed high-banked, half-mile Devil's Bowl Speedway clay oval.
Rilat has posted five O'Reilly ASCS National wins this season and has led the points since taking command on August 2 with a triumph at Joplin 66 Speedway. Having held a slim lead since that time, Rilat can clinch the $20,000 championship by finishing eighth or better on both nights.
Since missing the May 9 event in Oklahoma City due to a traffic accident, Wright has raced to victory lane 14 times in his attempt to track down the leaders. With 75 career ASCS victories to his credit, Wright has also topped the last four Devil's Bowl ASCS Winter Nationals.
Joining Rilat, Wright and Chappell for this weekend's action will be a number of top shoes, including Darren Stewart, Shane Stewart, Billy Alley, Tim Crawley, Cody Branchcomb, Toby Brown, Kevin Ramey, Danny Jennings, Jake Peters, Jason Martin, Garry Lee Maier, Jan Howard, Dale Howard and many more.
Racing action is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night. Devil's Bowl Speedway is located six miles east of I-635 on US 80, then three miles south on Lawson Road. For more information, contact the track at 972-222-2421.
