Davis Cleans Out ASCS Canyon Region at Manzanita
PHOENIX, Ariz. (October 6, 2007) -- Charles Davis, Jr., turned the tables on Jeremy Sherman by winning Saturday night's 30-lap American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region feature atop Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval.
After pocketing an extra $550 in the Pepsi Pole Challenge, Davis raced around R.J. Johnson for the lead past the midway point and then beat Sherman to the line for his fourth series win of the year.
Sherman and Davis diced over the opening rounds before Johnson raced by both of them to take command. But Davis was not to be denied, regaining the lead and pacing the final ten circuits aboard Jim Massey's No. 50 DRC.
Sherman was second, with Johnson settling for the show position. Josh Pelkey was fourth, while Nathan High raced from 17th to round out the top five in substitute duty for Andrew Reinbold.
Bob Ream, Jr., charged from 18th to sixth, with Chad Boat, Justin Fisher, Mike Martin and Bobby Taylor completing the top ten.
Johnson, Jeff Henry, Matt Rossi and Martin topped heat race action for the 31-car field, with High winning the "B" Main.
In the Pepsi Pole Challenge, which included a series of one-on-one match races between the top eight point earners from heat race action, eighth-point man Mike Leslie beat Fisher, Rossi and Martin in the first three matches before Davis steamrolled the balance of the match races by topping Leslie, Henry, Johnson and finally Sherman to collect the extra money.
