Rookie Sensation Cameron Dodson Scores 10th Win of Season
PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA - October 17, 2004 -Sprint car rookie sensation Cameron Dodson scored his 10th victory of the 2004 season at Ohio Valley Speedway, Parkersburg, West Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The season-ending event on the 3/8-mile semi-banked track was originally scheduled for Saturday night but rain caused the one-day delay.
A strong second-place run in the heat race put the competition on notice that the sixteen year-old was going to be strong in the feature. The top four finishers of each heat drew a pill for their starting position in the feature. Dodson drew number one putting the Greenfield, IN high school student and his #37 Joie of Seating, Hoosier Tire, Gaerte, Maxim on the pole for the 25-lap feature with 2004 track champion Tim Sites on the outside.
At the drop of the green, the two raced side by side for most of lap one when
Sites took the lead and held it until lap 12. Dodson never lost site of the leader as the two put distance between themselves and the remainder of the field. In lapped traffic, it was nose to push bar going in turn one of the 13th lap of the feature. Dodson made his move off of turn two to take the lead and held on for the remaining 12 laps.
"This was great fun," said Dodson. "Sites got a jump on me at the start so I had to tell myself just to be patient and wait for the right opportunity. Once I was able to follow his rhythm through lapped traffic, I was able to setup the pass and get by him.
"We have had such an incredible rookie season in the 410 winged sprint cars. Wow, I don't know who to thank first for all of the support we have gotten. The Joie of Seating, Hoosier Racing Tires, Simpson Performance Products, Hedman Hedders, NGK Spark Plugs, Benic Enterprises, Weld Wheels, Auto Meter Products, Gaerte Engines and Maxim Chassis are just a few of the great sponsors we have. There are more and I apologize for missing anyone."
"I am not sure if this is our last race of the season or if we will be able to get one or two more in," Dodson concluded. "With school, it is hard for me to get away because I don't want to get behind and let my grades drop but I don't want to end the racing season either!"
