The tradition of non-winged Sprint Car racing in Southern California will open a new chapter in 1997 as the California Challenge Sprint Car Association lights up its inaugural season at Bakersfield (CA) Speedway on March 8.

Over 65 drivers are registered to compete in this series for 360 cubic inch, steel-block powered cars, with over 20 races already scheduled throughout California and Arizona.

The CCSCA Sprint Cars utilize chassis rules which are identical to their wingless California cousins of the SCRA. A specific McCeary tire is used on the rear wheels, but other than the 360/steel block restriction the cars provide the same excitement of the 410 class. A three race series in October proved to be immensely popular and several CRA & SCRA veterans are planning to compete for the championship in this more affordable Sprint Car division.
