Center Lisle, NY - Mike Emhof scrapped and clawed his way to a top 10 finish at Thunder Mountain Speedway when the 2001 Central New York Mini Sprint (CNYMS) Tour visited the Center Lisle (NY) facility on June 9th. 32 mini sprints crowded the pits for the early season event.
From his outside pole position, Emhof powered his Pace Electronics/Heluva Good Foods sponsored mount into the lead. He easily held the lead past the halfway point, only to have the car suddenly slow due to mechanical problems.
He had to resort to the B-Main to qualify for the feature event. From his 14th starting position, Emhof bobbed and wove his EMC mini sprint up through the field to finish third. This placed him 19th on the 24 car starting grid for the main event.
When the green flag flew to start the feature, Emhof began his march up through the field. He took the high line, and for several laps side-by-side racing was the name of the game. He narrowly missed several mishaps, one a spectacular two car accident, leaving one mini sprint upside down at the entrance to pit road and bringing out the red flag. When the race resumed he was able to advance several more positions enroute to an 8th place finish.
The race was won by 2000 Thunder Mountain track champion Don Harvey. When the points were tallied, Emhof found himself in third in the CNYMS Tour points standings after two races.
The CNYMS Tour will next visit the Finger Lakes region for back-to-back races, with a stop at Canandaigua Speedway Saturday, June 23rd, and then the teams will make the short tow to Weedsport for a race on Sunday, June 24th.
