Dash Crash Ends Wimmer's Night at Calistoga
CALISTOGA, CA (May 27) -- Brandon Wimmer had Redi-Green Motorsports' #1K ARB Incorporated Maxim in first place in Saturday's dash race during the Gary Patterson Memorial when disaster struck for the second straight night at Calistoga Speedway.
Wimmer, who started outside the front row in the race to determine the first six starting positions in the main event, burst into the lead only to have his night end prematurely.
"We got the jump on the outside on the start to take the lead going into (turns) one and two," Wimmer said. "Coming out of two, the right rear (tire) exploded and the right front drag rail stuck in the ground and shot me straight into the wall. It destroyed the car. A rock or piece of debris in the track cut the tire, and we ended up in the wall. We thought we had a good night going, but that was it. We were looking forward to racing at Calistoga, but things happed that were beyond our control."
Wimmer was leading Saturday's Walt Ross Memorial at Calistoga Speedway when the top wing on the #1K collapsed and blocked his field of vision, forcing him to stop.
Wimmer's 106.088-MPH lap around Calistoga's semi-banked, ½-mile oval was the fifth-fastest lap in the 21-car field and only .129 seconds off the pace set by fast-qualifier Jonathan Allard. Wimmer passed Jason Botsford and Walt Ross Memorial winner Jason Statler on his way to a runner-up run in the Second Heat Race.
