BLOOMINGTON, IN (August 2, 2003) - Mike Miles and his Bloomington Speedway staff are well aware of the source of our success. While Mike and his staff do everything they can think of to make a visit to the red clay of Bloomington Speedway an experience that will be remembered with fondness for years to come. But, without the support of our loyal fans and competitors, none of this would be possible.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary, Mike Miles wanted to give something back to the fans and the competitors in the form of larger purses, double points, and the outstanding program that was bound to result. Our first effort to put this show on fell victim to the weatherman; and, for a few minutes last night, it appeared that this attempt might meet the same fate. However, it the weatherman were to prevail last night, he would have Mike Miles' determination to overcome. If there was any possible way to get this show in, it would be run. The rain was mercifully brief and light. However, getting a track back after any amount of rain after competition has begun is a tall order. But the competitors jumped in and helped to run the track in. .The track that resulted from all of this work provided for awesome racing the rest of the evening.

The South Central Building and Construction Trades Council members joined us in large numbers; and we enjoyed having them with us. They always enjoy themselves; and, after all, that' why we show up to race.

SPRINT CARS -

Three time Bloomington Speedway sprint car champion Derek Scheffel has run well all season; however, until last night, he had not found his way into victory lane. He filled that void in a big way last night. He started the evening by setting quick time in qualifications; and he finished second in his heat race to earn a berth in the feature event.

When the green flag waved to start the feature, 2002 Rookie of the Year Tim Spindler took the lead from the pole position and held it for the first four circuits. On the fifth lap, Kevin "Pup" Huntley powered the Dick Briscoe owned past Spindler to take the lead. It began to look like Huntley might cruise to victory as he had done earlier in the season in the Briscoe machine. However, Scheffel was coming. On the ninth lap, Scheffel slipped past Spindler to take second and set sail for Huntley.

On the 15th lap Huntley got tangled up with Rick Hayden in traffic; however, somehow Huntley manage to keep running and got the lead back on the restart. With a clear track ahead, it seemed that Huntley might well be able to cruise on to his second victory of the season. But Scheffel wanted this win very, very badly; and he would not be denied. He caught and passed Huntley on the 19th lap. The two continued to battle wheel to wheel until the last few circuits when Scheffel began to put a little distance between his Scheffel Brothers Racing sprinter and Huntley's Briscoe machine. He managed to hold on to score his first win of the season. Due to the fact that last night's show paid double points, the win almost certainly put Scheffel ahead in his drive for his fourth Bloomington Speedway championship.

Huntley held on to finish second ahead of Jerry Coons, Jr., Matt Westfall, Jon Sciscoe, Bobby Stines, Tom Busch, Tim Spindler, Matt Neely, and Kurt Gross.

In preliminary action, Kent Christian, Hayden, Dave Peperak, Chris Deckard, and Bill Baker won the heat races while Stines and Jerry Coons, Jr. prevailed in the "B" features:

The most serious event of the evening occurred when Danny Holtsclaw, at full speed, ran over another competitor's wheel and flipped wildly off the end of the track. He was transported to Bloomington Hospital where he was found to have broken vertebrae. He is expected to fully recover; but he'll be out of action for a while.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS -

Last week Jesse Cramer and Matt Boknecht entertained the Bloomington Speedway fans with side by side racing for the entire distance of the feature event. Last night offered more of the same except Clint and John DeMoss joined the struggle for the feature win. Clint DeMoss led the O'Neal Wood Products feature flag to flag; but it wasn't nearly as easy as that makes it seem. Clint and John DeMoss both started on the front row. However, Cramer and Boknecht were right behind them. Literally any of these four had the potential to win the feature from flag to flag.

On the 16th circuit Boknecht passed John DeMoss to take second. Three laps later Jesse Cramer moved past John DeMoss to take third. Cramer and Boknecht continued their battle from last week during the closing laps of last night's feature. Neither of them could put the other behind him in time to deal effectively with Clint DeMoss. However, had Clint DeMoss made a small mistake, he would have been running third - or fourth. But Clint made no mistake; and he brought home the feature win. Boknecht held on for second trailed by Cramer, John DeMoss, Brady Short, Jeff Bland, Jr., Mike Bowersox, Matt Bex, Lee Hobbs, and Shelby Miles.

In preliminary action, Bex, Clint DeMoss, and John DeMoss won the heat races while Clint DeMoss won the dash. Miles prevailed in the "B" feature.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS -

In the Tire & Wheel Center super stock division, Lee Hobbs came from his inside second row starting position to take the lead on the fourth circuit; and he never looked back. Troy Clark drove to a strong second place finish followed by Jack Frye.

It's been some time since Cale Kern ran on the red clay; but last night he proved that he hadn't forgotten the way around as he drove to a fourth place finish ahead of Danny Harris.

Jeremy Hines came from his 15th place starting position to finish sixth. Anthony Walker, Mel Bigham, Rick Hines, and Steve Bowlen rounded out the top ten.

Points leader Greg Kendall had a tough night; and he was forced to settle for a 12th place finish.
