BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 21, 2003) - After two straight weeks of rainouts, Bloomington Speedway finally caught a break from the weatherman. The night was nearly perfect for action on the red clay; and the racing was even better.

There was a real treat for sprint car fans at Bloomington Speedway Friday night. After a sparkling performance at the Terre Haute Action Track last weekend, Kevin "Pup" Huntley made a surprise return to the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. Kevin Briscoe was in Ohio running Danny Roberts' sprinter in Buckeye Speedweek; and his father, Dick Briscoe, decided that he wanted to race at Bloomington Speedway; and, when he selected a driver, he didn't mess around. Kevin lives in Bloomington; and he had proven that he hasn't forgotten how to run without a kite in USAC Silver Crown competition. What a combo - Briscoe & Huntley!!!

Huntley was fifth quick in qualifications. If everything went according to plan, Huntley would have the coveted outside front row starting spot for the feature. He finished fifth in his heat race to snag the final transfer spot to the feature event. The heat races went to Brian Gerster in the Law Brothers sprinter, Jon Sciscoe, and Josh Cunningham.

Bloomington Speedway's only three time track champion, Derek Scheffel, was third quick in qualifications; however, from there on, he had rough evening. In his heat race, he was, due to his fast qualification, starting in the back. Jonathan Vennard jumped the cushion in front of Derek. However, when he powered his way back onto the racing surface, he collected Derek and got him upside down. The impact straightened Jonathan out; and he went on to transfer into the feature with his second place finish. The Scheffel Brothers sprinter was returned to the pits where an attempt would be made to prepare it for the "B" feature.

When the green flag dropped to start the "B", Mike Hunnicutt jumped into the lead with Scheffel on his tail. However, it was all to be for no purpose; because, at the back of the field, Bobby Barger, Kenny Carmichael, Jr., and Nick Johnson all got together battling for the same real estate in the first turn. Carmichael found himself in the air where both front wheels separated themselves from his mount. Both he and Johnson were done for the night.

When the race was restarted, Hunnicutt took the point and held it until the sixth circuit when the veteran Scheffel slipped past him and drove on to the win. Hunnicutt held on to finish second ahead of recent Purdue magna cum laude graduate Bobby Stines, Steve Rone, and Rick Hayden.

When the green flag dropped on the feature event, flagman Rusty Nunn was forced to call it back due to a bad start. Butch Winings apparently cut a tire and returned to the work area; however, his crew was apparently caught off guard; and they were unable to get the tire changed before the field was restacked. The green flag flew again - this time minus Winings in the field.

The second attempt to start the race also was for naught as Rick Hayden flipped to bring out the red flag. This gave the Winings crew an opportunity to redeem itself; and Winings drove on to a 14th place finish.

At the front of the field, Huntley charged into the lead and led the feature flag to flag. Scheffel passed Kurt Gross for second on the third circuit and charged after Huntley. He kept Huntley within range; but he was unable to get past the Pup. However, considering the misfortune that befell him in route to the feature, second was pretty good. Mike Hunnicutt turned in the best performance of his career on the red clay coming home third.

Brian Gerster finished third in his maiden voyage in the Law Brothers sprinter. Jason Knoke recently decided to retire from sprint car racing leaving the seat open. The Law Brothers have seen a number of great drivers come and go including Marvin Deputy, Leon Thickstun, Jon Stanbrough, and Rusty McClure; however, there was probably no departure that they regretted as much as Jason's. The relationship between Jason and the Law family was something very special. However, back to this week, if Gerster's ride was an audition, everyone has to be pleased.

Kurt Gross came home fifth trailed by Jason Robbins, Bobby Stines, Justin Marvel, Kevin Chambers, and Jon Sciscoe.

The only mar on Matt Boknecht's evening was his second place starting position in his heat race. However, he drove to the heat race win, won the dash, and led the feature flag to flag. The win was Boknecht's second this season on the red clay.

Brady Short out-dueled Lancaster, Ky's J.P. Karpowicz in a race-long battle for second.

O'Neal Wood Products points leader Ray Humphrey drove from his tenth place starting position to finish fourth. Although he won his heat race, Humphrey had to start tenth; because, according to Bloomington Speedway rules, winning the two previous features mandated that he start the feature no better than tenth.

Eighth grader Jeff Bland, Jr. earned the hard charger award driving from his 18th place starting position to a fifth place finish. Robbie Gullion, Lee Hobbs, Ryan Thomas, Rodney Harris, Jr., and J.P. Hume rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, Matt Boknecht, J.P. Karpowicz, Lee Hobbs, and Ray Humphrey won the heat races while Boknecht took the dash. Phil VanSant won the "B" feature.

The Tire & Wheel Center super stock feature was probably the best race of the evening. Danny Harris took the lead; and he held it until he and Chris Hillman had taken the white flag. On the final circuit Hillman slipped by him for the win. Ben DuBois came home third ahead of Joe Lucas, Michael Vest, Randy Howe, Chris Deweese, Jack Frye, Greg Kendall, and Kris Starks. During the middle of the race, the veteran Lee Hobbs and the savvy newcomer Jerry Adams were battling for position; and, after tangling on the race track, they wound up off of the race track in a tangle. Both cars were pulled back to the pits much the worse for wear. Sometimes racers are just a little too enthusiastic.

Michael Vest (18th to 5th) and Chris Deweese (20th to 7th) shared hard charger awards.

In preliminary action, Danny Harris, Randy Howe, Joe Lucas, and Chris Hillman won the heat races while Harris won the dash. Jerry Adams won the "B" feature and was on the way to the front when he and Hobbs had their problem.
