BLOOMINGTON, IN (August 28, 2004) -- Although our teams are going to have a couple of weeks off, last night they came with a job to do; and they knew it. For the sprint car teams, their year end points standing was determined last night. The O'Neal Wood Products modified and the Tire & Wheel Center super stock teams have one night of points racing left; but some of them are going to have to make up a lot of ground to get where they want to be at season's end. Obviously, they can't all win their championship; but all of them want to win it. And, they're be pulling out all of the stopes to get the best possible result from the season's final shows.

As is nearly always the case, the fans who came out to enjoy last nights racing were rewarded with outstanding competition all night long.

SPRINT CARS --

We were pleased to have two of our drivers back from the disabled list. Four time sprint car champion Derek Scheffel broke his shoulder the first night of sprint week; and last night was his first night back in the cockpit. It's certainly appropriate that his first race off of the injured list would be at Bloomington Speedway. Jared Fox dropped an engine on his hand a few weeks ago; but he was back in competition last night. We're happy to have these two drivers back with us.

As usual, the track was manicured to perfection for the sprint car qualifications. The fastest cars in qualifications and their position in the qualification order were as follows: 1. Kevin Briscoe (22), Jon Stanbrough (6). 3. Bryan Clauson (4), 4. Derek Scheffel (19), 5. Dick Gaines II (14), and 6. Tim Spindler (13). Obviously, the track stayed pretty consistent throughout qualifications.

In the first heat, Bobby Stines came from his third place starting position to take the lead and then managed to hold off Kevin Briscoe and Derek Scheffel to win the heat.

In the second heat, Alex Pruett started on the pole and managed to stay in front of Dick Gaines II, Jon Stanbrough, and Kevin Huntley to win the first race of his career on the red clay.

The third heat featured the most serious incident of the evening when former Bloomington Speedway rookie of the year Tim Spindler tangled with another car and flipped wildly off of the third turn. He climbed from the car uninjured; but his car was done for the evening. Spindler got a late start this season; because, over the winter, he bought his first house. We all know the kind of hole that can put into race car preparation time. And, before really got past the joys of home ownership under control, he agreed to step in and help his friend, Keith Kunz, take care of Tom Hessert's sprinter at the track and in the shop for most of the season until now.

As if all of that weren't enough, he took a pretty hard blow to the rear end last weekend at Lawrenceburg; and he had to make repairs on it to get it ready for this weekend.

Kent Christian was hooked up and drove to a strong heat race win followed by Kevin Chambers, Bryan Clauson, Mitch Cunningham, Jared Fox, and Ryan Hamilton.

Jon Sciscoe started on the outside of the front row in the B feature and led it flag to flag. Danny Holtsclaw, Ryan Hamilton, Kenny Carmichael, Jr, and Steve Rone took the rest of the transfer spots to the feature.

When Tim Spindler had to scratch from the feature Jon Sciscoe became the sixth fastest qualifier. Suddenly he went from starting inside of the fourth row to starting on the pole. He took advantage of his good fortune by taking the early lead from Dick Gaines II who started outside. However, he was only able to hold the lead for a couple of laps before Gaines got past him.

Gaines held the lead until the 17th circuit when Kevin Briscoe passed him to take the lead. Briscoe took second place by passing Bryan Clauson on the eighth lap; and it took him the next nine laps to get by Gaines. Teammates Derek Scheffel and Jon Stanbrough ran the entire feature together until Stanbrough passed Gaines to take second on the white flag lap. Gaines would have to settle for third ahead of Scheffel, Bryan Clauson, Kevin "Pup" Huntley, Kent Christian, Kevin Chambers, Jared Fox, and Kenny Carmichael.

Although, when Briscoe unloaded last night, he knew that he had won another Bloomington Speedway sprint car championship, he had one thing on his mind -- scoring his sixth Bloomington Speedway sprint car feature win. As usual, Briscoe was up to the task.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS --

Brady Short came to Bloomington Speedway last night with a 21 point lead in the O'Neal Wood Products points race. The draw was not kind to Brady's drive for the championship; and he started inside of the fifth row. However, Brady was up to the task; and he drove through the field win the heat race. He then went on to win the dash to earn the pole for the feature. When the green flag dropped to start the feature, Brady drove to a flag to flag feature win.

Dan Hamstra is one of the top modified drivers in the state; but he seldom runs with us. Last night he decided to try for his second win of the season. He finished third in his heat to earn a berth in the feature event where he started 12th. It took Hamstra only nine laps for Hamstra to catch and pass Jesse Cramer. He would chase Short for the rest of the feature event; but he never really posed a serious challenge to Short's lead.

Clint DeMoss protected his place in the points standings by bringing the 4T home third ahead of Gary Barrow who is also directly behind him in the points race. Jesse Cramer protected his posiition in the points race with his fifth place finish in the feature.

Nathan Voorhies salvaged a decent finish for the evening when he drove from 17th to 8th in the feature.

Shelby Miles had a terrible night. The Miles team was late getting to the track due to having to change engines before the race. He rolled the car out for the heat race; but it was apparent that the engine still had problems. Shelby borrowed Brady Short's backup car; but he would have to start at the back of one of the "B" features. He gave the machine a great ride but he came up one position short of a transfer to the feature. The night probably cost Miles any reasonable chance of repeating as O'Neal Wood Product modified champion.

In perliminary action Short, Joe Gilbert, Clint DeMoss, and Cramer took the heat races while Nathan Voorhies and Rodney Harris, Jr.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS --

Chris Deweese came into the 2004 season with high hope of winning the Tire & Wheel Center super stock championship. However, he and his team have been plagued with problems. Last night everything came together; and he scored his first feature win of the season.

Tom Ault finished second in the dash to earn the outside front row starting position in the feature. He took the early lead; and it looked like he might score the second feature win of his career. His first wind came just like last Friday night at Bloomington Speedway. However, on the 12th lap Deweese pulled past Ault for the lead; and he would hold it all the way to the checkered flags.

Ben Dubois went into tonight's racing with a fairly comfortable lead in the points race. However, Greg Kendall was in second place going into last night's racing; and Kendall is very serious about running up front at Bloomington Speedway. Greg was running a good strong feature when he tangled with another car in the first turn. The incident ripped most of the sheet metal off of the right side of Kendall's mount. However, Kendall is no quitter. He stopped at the flagstand; and one of the track officials ripped most of the flapping sheetmetal from the car. Greg then pulled back into position and soldiered the car home to a sixth place finish.

Toward the end of the feature a spirited battle developed among Danny Harris, Jack Frye, and Ben DuBois for third place finish. Harris prevailed ahead of Frye and DuBois.

In preliminary action, Ault, Anthony Walker, and Troy Clark won the heat races while Kent Robinson took the B feature. Walker prevailed in the dash.
