BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 5, 2004) -- Another great night of racing went into the Bloomington Speedway record books last night. Now that school is out and high school sports are finally done for the season, we can get even more serious about the business of racing. Racing has been our business since 1923; and business is good at Bloomington Speedway. As usual, Mike Miles had the track manicured to perfection; and it was left to the drivers to use it to put on a great show for the fans. As usual, they left Bloomington Speedway with a racing fix that would, if necessary, get them through the next week.

Kevin "Pup" Huntley Puts Roberts Sprinter in Victory Lane --

In anticipation of the Sheldon Kinser Memorial which will be run next Friday night, the pits were full of sprinters tuning up for the big race. Kevin Briscoe, Derek Scheffel, Justin Marvel, Kevin Huntley, Eric Shively, etc. were all on hand.

Kevin Briscoe had won the previous three sprint car features at Bloomington Speedway. Last week Briscoe won a feature event starting in tenth position. This, of course, can be done with a few strategic yellow flags to close up the field; however, last week, Briscoe won a feature that had gone flag to flag under the green. Of course, this put him in the position of needing to do it again. In consideration of the task facing Briscoe, Mike Miles put up some extra cash for Briscoe if he could pull it off again. At first it looked like there was no way. Kevin "Pup" Huntley had started up front in the Danny Roberts sprinter; and he was fast. However, Briscoe was methodically working his way to the to the front. Just before they reached heavy lapped traffic, Briscoe was ready to challenge Pup for the lead. However, as they worked their way through lapped traffic, Pup began to put more distance between the Roberts Sprinter and Briscoe. Briscoe came up just a little short. And, for the second week in a row, the sprint feature had gone flag to flag under the green.

Bryan Clauson flipped violently coming out of the fourth turn for his first Bloomington Speedway feature win last week. He was taken to the Bloomington Hospital for a precautionary check. He was checked over and released; however, checking Bryan out was the small part of the job for Bloomington Hospital staff. They had to answer call after call from Bryan's fans checking on his condition.

In a display of his dedication to competing at Bloomington Speedway, he was back in the pits last night with a new car and the determination to renew his quest for his first Bloomington Speedway feature win. When asked about his recovery from the crash, Bryan commented, "Most of the pain was gone by Wednesday morning. There wasn't a lot left of the car that we could use. But we did manage to save the motor, the tail tank, and some of the body panels."

Certainly, it will take a week or two to sort out the new car; but he will be back battling for his first feature win in very short order. Clauson has desire and focus that are almost never found in drivers that young.

Jared Fox and his crew displayed amazing tenacity in dealing with adversity last night. During hot laps Jared and Joe Cansdale tangled with Jared getting upside down. They left the pit area and went home to get the backup car. However, in the heat race, Jared flipped again. As the "B" feature was being pushed off, the Fox trailer pulled back into the pits. Everyone thought that they had repaired a car; and were going to attempt to run the "B" feature. However, it turned out that they had only returned to pick up the second damaged car. The Fox crew should have the car back together and be ready to contend for the Sheldon Kinser Memorial championship.

Kevin Briscoe set quick time for the second week in a row; Bobby Stines, Kevin Huntley, Eric Shively, and Kenny Carmichael won the heat heat races. Dick Gaines II won the "B" feature in convincing fashion over Justin Marvel, Jimmy Laer, and Mitch Cunningham.

Pup Huntley led the sprint car feature flag to flag. Four time sprint car champion Derek Sceffel passed Clauson on th fifth circuit to take second. Briscoe then passed Scheffel on the 11th lap; but he was unable to get past Huntley. Scheffel hung on to finish third trailed by Eric Shively, Bryan Clauson, Justin Marvel, Kenny Carmichael, Dick Gaines II, Kenny Carmichael, Jr., and Bobby Stines.

Boknecht Wins First Feature of His Modified Season --

Three of Bloomington Speedway's top O'Neal Wood Products modified racers, Matt Boknecht, Brady Short, and Shelby Miles, all won their heat races. In the dash to determine their starting positions in the feature they all ran together with nobody enjoying more than a half a car length lead. Boknecht won followed by Short, and Miles. When the green flag dropped to start the feature, it looked like the feature might be a longer version of the dash. Short led the first two circuits before being passed by Boknecht. It was Boknecht, Short, and Miles until the 19th lap when Jesse Cramer passed Short and Miles to take second. After his great charge to the front, it seemed that Cramer might score his first O'Neal Wood Products modified feature win. However, with two laps to go, Cramer experienced a mechanical failure and rolled dejectedly into the infield. On the same lap, Miles found his way past Short to sew up second place.

Short held on to finish third trailed by Ralph Groomer, Lee Hobbs, Clint DeMoss, Joe Godsey, Jay Humphrey, Michael Sterrett, and A.J. Bowlen. Nathan Voorhies prevailed in the "B" feature.

Kendall Is Back in Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock Victory Lane --

Last weekend, Greg Kendall had to start the Tire & Wheel Center super stock feature in tenth place. Like Kevin Briscoe, he had won the previous two Tire & Wheel Center features. However, since Kendall didn't win last week; and he was able to start from the position that he earned this year.

Jason Clark, Gerald Todd, and Greg Kendall won the heat races. Kendall came back and won the dash to earn the right to start the feature on the pole.

When the green flag dropped to start the feature Kendall charged into the lead. Gerald Todd fell in behind him in second place trailed by Ben DuBois, Chris Hillman, Kevin Arthur, and Anthony Walker. On the seventh circuit, Hillman moved past Todd to take second. Hillman and DuBois battled for second place lap after lap. Hillman held on to finish second trailed by DuBois, Walker, Kevin Arthur, Steven Godsey, Todd, Randy Howe, Troy Clark, and Winston Howe.
