BLOOMINGTON, IN (April 30, 2004) - The fans at Bloomington Speedway last night experience something that seldom is seen. The age range of the sprint car drivers who were on hand was 49 years. The youngest was, of course, 14 year old Bryan Clauson. This is not a surprise. He had fast time on April 23. The oldest, however, was a shock. He was the "One-armed Bandit", Chuck Amati. The 63 year old Amati, retired from the cockpit 14 years ago. Rusty Wagley put together the car; and Amati has committed to drive it for the season. Amati who has just been elected to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, is a driver that just about all of the competitors have heard about. However, probably few of them had seen him run; and even fewer have raced against him. The Wagley team still had some work to do in getting the car sorted out; however, they'll almost certainly enjoy their season.

It looked very much like the weatherman would cheat the Bloomington Speedway fans out of a great evening of racing as a light rain interrupted the third O'Neal Wood Products modified heat race. Mike Miles came very close to calling it a rainout; however, the rain that had never really been that heavy stopped; and the "preferred pushers" ironed the track in in fairly short order. The balance of the program was run without further interference from the weatherman.

Briscoe Wins First Feature of the Season -

For the second week in a row a "seven" car had quick time. This time, it was the red seven of Jon Sciscoe. Jason Robbins, Kevin Chambers, Kenny Carmichael, Kevin Briscoe, and Bobby Stines were the six fastest qualifiers who would make up the invert.

In the first heat Shawn Krockenberger took the early lead and was able to hold off a charging Jared Fox and Jon Sciscoe. Last week's feature winner, Eric Shively was only able to get a fourth place finish; but it was all he needed to earn a ticket to the feature event. Kenny Carmichael managed to to take the final transfer to the feature.

In the second heat, it was all Bryan Clauson. He jumped out to a big lead and stayed there. In the closing laps of the feature he slipped over the edge and lost some of his lead. However, when he gathered it up, he again stretched out his lead to the point where it had been before the miscue. He won by a straightaway'.

Michael Hagdemeier won the final sprint car heat race; and Jimmy Laser took the B feature.

Twenty year old Jared Fox started on the pole and took the lead. Two time Bloomington Speedway champion Kevin Briscoe passed Bobby Stines to take second on the sixth circuit; however, on the tenth circuit, Sciscoe moved past Briscoe into second place. It appeared that Sciscoe would give Fox a real race; however, on the 13th lap, he was sidelined with a flat left front tire. This gave second back to Briscoe; but he didn't seem to be able to gain on Fox. During the closing laps Briscoe began to reel in Fox; but it looked as if Fox would be able to hold him off. Coming down to take the white flag Briscoe slipped the white #5 under Fox to take the lead; and he was able to hold off Fox to close the deal. Fox held on to finish second ahead of Kenny Carmichael, Rick Vaughn, Jason Robbins, Bill Rose, Eric Shively, Shawn Krockenberger, Ed Hassler, and Josh Cunningham.

The win was the first of the season for Briscoe..

Clint DeMoss Wins O'Neal Wood Products Modified Feature -

Richie Lex won his heat race and the dash to earn the pole position for the start of the O'Neal Wood Products modified feature. However, Lex was only able to hold the point for two circuits before Clint DeMoss took away the lead. DeMoss first had to battle Shelby Miles for the lead; however, when Miles was forced to retire to the work area to replace a flat tire, Brady Short came up to test DeMoss. However, DeMoss would not be denied. He led the rest of the way to the checkered flags with Short holding on to finish second. Last week's feature winner, Dan Hamstra was forced to settle for third on the red clay this week followed by Lex and Jesse Cramer.

Fifteen year old Jeff Bland, Jr. who won the opening night O'Neal Wood Products modified feature, spun on the first lap of the feature and had to go to the tail. Bland was able to soldier the car home to a respectable sixth place finish. Paul Bumgardner, Jeremy Hines, Rodney Harris, Jr., and Chris Hillman rounded out the top ten.

Last season's most improved O'Neal Wood Products modified racer, J.P. Karpowicz of Lancaster, Ky., made his first appearance of the season on the red clay; but he was sidelined on the tenth circuit when a shunt damaged his beautiful new car too much to continue.

In preliminary action, Lex, Clint DeMoss, Ray Humphrey, and Shelby Miles won the heat races while Lee Hobbs took the B feature. Lex won the dash. Mechanical failure during the dash sidelined Ray Humphrey's mount for the evening.

JEREMY HINES TAKES TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCK FEATURE -

Jeremy Hines of Seymour made his first visit of the season to Bloomington Speedway; but his performance obviously didn't suffer from the late start. He started with a good draw that put him outside of the first row to start his heat race. He won his heat race and the dash. He then went on to lead the feature flag to flag. It appeared that Trent Niflis would give Hines all that he could handle; however, over the first few circuits, Danny Harris had been closing in on Niflis. On the eighth lap Harris moved into second place. Three laps later Greg Kendall moved past Niflis into third. Kendall and Harris waged their battle for second until Kendall was sidelined with a flat tire on the final lap. Chris Deweese came up to finish third trailed by Anthony Walker, Ben DuBois, Niflis, Mike Jones, Steve Hollars, Gerald Todd, and Michael Purtlebaugh.

Leading up to the exciting feature, Niflis, Hines, and Harris won the heat races; while Purtlebaugh took the B Feature.
